Leg-One: Roscoe, IL to Columbus, IN


363 Miles from Roscoe to Columbus, IN

We will pick-up Biscuits-n-Gravy, and Rayski at the north-end of Bloomington at around 10-11am (depending on how fast we can make it from Roscoe to Bloomington on Route 39 South).

Once connecting with them, we'll still have a long ride ahead of us to Columbus.

Entire route is on Interstate routes. The only congested areas we'll encounter will be around Bloomington, Champaign, and Indianapolis. Other than that the slab should be decent; but maybe boring.

Leg-Two from Columbus, IN to Maggie Valley, NC

Again; this route is all on interstate routes.

429 miles total on this leg. Will be a long day... but fun!

Congestion will occur near the larger cities; other than that it should be smooth sailing. The route should slowly but surely begin to improve once into Kentucky and then on further south to MV.

That route looks good to me Greg. I sure hope that some of our snow has melted by then! Cal and Dmac and I have to work out our route to your place , but it looks like it will be the super slab.

It will save you some time to take the interstate to here. Given the fact your ride will be a three day ride, you may want to keep each day's ride as short as possible ;) That is if your bones are as old as mine are getting.

Surprisingly, I can easily put 8-10 hours a day in the saddle, and do it for 10 days straight. Thankfully, I have no medical issues to deal with and I am only 57 years young. Maybe it has something to do with my profession. I spend about 5-6 hours a day at my desk and only a few hours in the shop. After reading another post on the subject of toll roads, I have a question. Will we be riding any toll roads?

GLWilson--Just to inform you after looking at the map from Roscoe to Columbus, IN You not knowing this but want to inform you that I-465 is heavily under onstruction at this time & will be in June. Many lane changes & uneven pavement. I do not like riding in these conditions as I am sure you & others do not also. I will send you an alternate route to avoid yet not take the group to far out of the way. Our hope is that everyone arrives safely & without incident.

Thanks Don. We all appreciate it. I was going to double-check contraction areas before we left just in case; but if you know that to be true then we'll take an alternative route.

I did see a county road that cut across from I-74 to I-65 that would avoid having to go near Indianapolis. It would surely add time to our trip; but would likely be safer -- which I am all about.

Let us know if you have any ideas!!

Here is a alternative route that I looked-up that seems reasonable. It is only 68 miles from when we get off I-74 to Columbus. Let me know if you think this would work.

Gibby... the only toll-roads are right near where I live; however when we get closer to the date I was going to send out directions to avoid it.

You can get to my area without having to do on it. You just have to make sure you don't miss the exit -- otherwise there isn't any option but to pay tolls.

I know where you are talking about. I see them there all the time.

Overall, I don't see our group doing much over 70-75 MPH on the interstate; which only puts us slightly over the limit in Illinois and Indiana.

Okay... this is the detour-route to avoid the construction on the bypass 465 around Indy on our way to Columbus as suggested by our local-area expert Bluekaw1600 (most of us met and know Don & Melody from our regional rally).

PS: Don't pay attention to the little additional "loop" the map shows when exiting I-74... I was just simply too lazy to correct it. We won't be adding that to the route. ;)

I asked John to go, but he said he does not want commit yet since he doesn't know what his summer is going to bring. I will hit him again about it. I know he would have fun!
