Pulling the Fuel Tank

Hello all. I almost had a fire on my bike because SOME F**King stupid idiot did not FUSE the wires that goes to the radio. He wired it up directly to the battery. WHAT A F**KING IDIOT.

Now that my rant is done , I have to pull the fuel tank. I did read a thread back in Aug 10 about pulling it. It was helpfull. I do have a question. The Service Manual suggests using rubber hose to stop fuel from leaking from the tank. I have completely drained the tank. Do I need to worry about fuel leaking from the tank or will it just be residue?

You can just disconnect all the hoses, I think there are five in total. You don't have to use any hose as only about a spoonfull will drip once its all disconnected.
Take a look at Gadgets sight, it explains how to remove it easily.

The only time I have drained the tank to remove it was when I replaced the fuel pump. If you do not need to pull the fuel pump or fuel guage sending unit it will only lose a couple drops of gas when you disconnect the fuel line.

+1 no need to drain an FI fuel tank to remove it. Few small drops nothing else. Having it with less (as in after riding it) gas in the tank makes it weight less when removing, but that's about it.

I would suggest get a buddy to help, it makes it much easier to get at the disconnect for the fuel line if taking the tank completely off, like this case.

After you pull it the first time you will see that it is not a big job. I pull mine a couple of times each riding season to clean and do a visual inspection. As the others have said, only a few drops of fuel will leak out. I just put a few paper towels down and throw them in the fire pit after I am finished. You may want to think about an auxiliary fuse block.

I was going to ask the same question, I want to run my wires for the aux fuse box I got, Now I don't have to!! I luv this place ;)

Well, did get the fuel tank off. Much easier next time. The service manual makes it seem harder than it is. I have purchased all the AUX fuse box and wire. Just in the process of doing the wiring. It was a VERY nice day to ride today and I kick myself for starting what I did but I feel someone was looking out for me and wanted me to find this. Anyway, all will be better when my BABY is back together and I am riding her.

After youve done it the first time, removing the tank is a snap. I'll be removing mine tomorrow to run a pair of speaker wires under it. I like cleaning things up under there as well when I have it off also. That road grime gets everywhere.

I agree, the first time I pulled my tank, I had more questions about how to do it than answers...Until I took a close look at the underside of the tank...Now that I understand what hoses comes off and how...It's a snap...Thanks to the people on this forum...

Absolutely, the people on this forum are GREAT. Now for another question where would you recommend to put this aux fuse box. It is this one : http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...questid=371722

I was going to put it in the LEFT side plate. Suggestions is needed. I am going to hook it up to the relay and a FUSE.....lol.....

I have 2 of the same ones that I'm planning on putting in my bike and do a rewire of all my add on electrical so far with some additions.
1 will be switched power via a Relay and the other one will be unswitched power.
I think the BEST location that will have room is the left side behind the cover. Since I now have a trunk for extra storage the tool bag will go there and I can modify the backing plate like others have done to make it a neat easy to get to area. I like that area for acc aux fuse as 2 reasons. 1. It is easy access as you don't need a screw driver, just the key to open it and 2. it's secure because of the key. Also since it is close to the battery the MAIN power wire to it is a short run so not as much required (saves money and trying to tuck a thick wire into someplace?)

There are a few on here who've done it and looks very NEAT and Tidy there. Also that is where I am going to try and put my fuel processor as well. Also central location if you run wires fore or aft for any accessories (power cords etc) you want to run.

Thanks Scott. I have a fuel processor there but I am sure there is enough room for the AUX fuse box. I don't have a tool pouch yet but putting it in the back trunk is a great place. Thanks for the idea. Where did you get the SWITCHED wire from to activate the relay? You guys are GREAT!

I tapped into the running light wire right above the battery.
