MORNIG TICKING.

I CURENTLY RUN A 20W50 FULL SYN OIL AND EVERY ONCE IN AWILE IT WILL TICK LIKE HELL IN THE MORNING AND WONT GO AWAY FOR 5-6 MILES. I WAS WONDERING IF A 10/40 SEMI SYN WOULD BE A BETTER CHOICE.

I haven't had this happen on my Nomad, but my Vulcan 750 would do this when the cam chain tensioner would be out-of-wack. After 3 to 5 miles for everything to warm up, everything was great.

I don't know if this would also be the case on a Nomad.

Lots of Nomad owners report ticking in the morning. It's just the nature of the beast.

Is 10w40 thinner than 20W50? If so would it tick more?

I've run both and don't hear a difference. I do think that the transmission operates smooth though.

I certainly don't know everything about oil...and BD will probably come behind me and add a few things (or correct a few things), but here's what I've learned about oil.....

I use the grade 15w50 in my Nomad. The "15" is the rating on how well the oil protects at startup. The lower the rating, the better protection at startup. The "50" rates the protection at normal operating temperatures. The higher the rating here, the better protection.

Obviously, if one could buy oil at a rating of say, 5w75, life would be grand, but I think I've seen only 5w30, 10w40 and 15w50. Here in Texas (especially in the Summer) I like to have the highest rating for normal operating temps that I can.

OK BD, come on in and rip me apart....LOL.

Maxum4 Ultra is a synthetic 5W50 and is for wet clutches.

Motorex Power synt 4T is 10W60 and is API:SG which should be ok in wet clutch.

Anyone use these? A local sport bike shop swears by Motorex oil.

Hey spirello I use 10/40 during the late fall,winter and early spring then go to a 20/50 during summer because it gets hot here and 20/50 is better for hotter temps.. I have found that if you use that 20/50 and its cold out it take a while for that oil to warm up and thin out and thats why i think your getting that ticking sound. I know mine did that but once i went to the 10/40 during theose colder months my bike started and ran better with almost no ticking at all.. Hope that helps...

They're all available thru local shops here in Northern Califonia. You typically find them in sportbike shops, but you can mail order too.
Also Repsol has Synthetic 4T Racing 10W50 which I've used. It covers outside temps from 14F to 104+ F according to the Nomad MOM
