Car Tire on Nomad
Welcome Rainman,
I'd never consider it but some here have and have done it. Check out: http://kawanow.proboards77.com/index...ay&thread=4325 and there was another more extensive thread on the subject but can't find it just now, was using the "dark side" implicaton as well. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Car Tire on Nomad
I am just in testing mode, with a Dunlop Sport 5000 in 195/60 R16. It has under 200 miles so far. The jury is out...

Car Tire on Nomad
Quote:
At one point I had 32 psi in it and it was like riding an amusment park ride with a magnetic rail in curves. These speeds were upto 60 MPH, or between 35 mph and 60. On that ride I romped it up to 80 as indicated on the speedo, and almost thought I felt a wiggle in the rear.. I mentioned this on the delphi DarkSide forum. I called the thread Little Wiggles. Well I was told to put the tire upto 40 psi, which I did, but not all that fast. Before I did I ran out on a Interstate ramp to over 95 mph as indicated on the speedo, and when I rolled off I had a definated wiggle.. So I added that 40 psi and on dirt it might as well be ice. That makes for a sharp handeling characteristic, and isn't 'my feel', but it will do 90 MPH straight fine... So today I dropped the psi to 36, and did a steady 80 with no wiggles and took a back road with hard curves, and this might be my magic number.. But I did really like that 32 psi at lesser speed over all. So in reality the jury is out. I am seeking that magnetic rail ride, with no higher speed wiggles.. The tire may not be the cause of these wiggles at all either. This could be the brickstone... It could be road surfaces, it coiuld be the swingarm, although it was serviced by ME, the dealer didn't have seals, so I had to use the worn 'thrust bearing seal fanges with 9,000+ on them. Oh today I hit the 10,000 mark while riding and checking the time. I was like huh??? the time is 10,000.1 huh? I wuz begiunin' ta' think those weirdo's in Texas got it right after all, and the world had just ended 30 days late , as they said the world was coming to the end on June 4th 08... I wuz sure I was antique and around the next bend I was going to see a whole different kind of woman! One from the year 10,000.1.. I must admit to being one "Fine Specimen" LOL

Ponch, or Pablo I can't remember for sure had a wiggle in his bike also if I remember correctly, perhaps you could check his posts and learn what he did to solve it.

Must have been Pablo, as I haven't done the car tire yet. I am due for tires in the next week. I think I will go Metzler.

You can't go wrong with a Metzeler, thats for sure, but unless some of us try different stuff things would never improve.

I still have a high speed wobble, but I have to get up to about 105 indicated to experience it. Under 105 it's as smooth as glass. The control in the twisties on wet roads was great, and the comfort is better than with the MC tire. I kept it at a constant 85-90 indicated most of the way down through Oklahoma and Texas. I usually run the tire at 26 psi, but put it up to 27.5 for the trip, since I had Julie and lots of luggage on board.

Hey Pablo, not meaning to change the subject but I like the ape hangers you got on that Nad.
How do you like them, and where did you get them from. They look like they are about 16-18 inches, is that right. They look real good. |

A indicvated 105 MPH wiggle wouldn't be a problem for me, as I never get up in that speed. I did it once an it was just a tad to fast for me.. If I can be 'confident' that there is no wiggles at a indicated 95 mph I will be set.
I have no GPS and know no one with one I can ride with. So I will have to use the term 'indicated' untill I know whay if any the 195/60/R16 does. It appears to have corrected the speedo error some, but I can't be sure.

I keep my Continental Vanco 2 at 32lbs and, seriously, never even think about it being there anymore. The 'wiggles' is caused by too much air and, as a tire heats up, pressure is added so when you are starting out with 36lbs cold, you may be running 40+ after a few miles of use. I'd guess your 'sweet spot' is 32 - 34lbs cold. You would be amazed how much difference even a couple lbs can make.
One thing to note also. Don't increase the pressure just because you have a heavier load than usual. I made that mistake once adding 2lbs, but ended up taking it back out 80 miles down the road. These tires are extremely sensitive to tire pressure. We do that on MC tires to improve handling and keep the wear from cupping under heavy load, due to its rounded tread profile, but the car tire doesn't require this. I just got back from my 2nd trip to Eureka Springs since going darkside. Was with 4 other bikes, 3 of which are friends that I rarely get to ride with, and they didn't realize I was running a car tire until the middle of the second day (after I told them). They said they never realized a car tire could perform that well in the curves. |
