Kuryakyn cruise control throttle assist

Guess this may be a dumb question but here we go. Just got my new Kuryakyn cruise control in the mail today. The one that mounts into the bar and you twist to look the throttle grip in place. Going on a 2003 1500 Nomad. Took the throttle boss off and looked into the end of the stock handle bar. About an inch up in there is a plug welded in place as to block off the bar hole. Is that just a plate or is it a bar to weight the handle bar for vibrations. If it's just for a plug( wasp, bugs, ect.), guess you drill it out for the cruise control mounting shaft? Holler, Chuck.

Sounds like thast the piece the original grip end weight was screwed into. There should be a threaded hole in it. If you can find a long enough bolt to reach in there and screw into it you should be able to pull it out. Another option would be to drive it in deeper I guess.

Thanks for the reply. It's got 2 places of tack weld with no hole. Looks to be something like a plug for bugs, dirt, ect. Does look to be a factory thing and not something a previous owner may have done. Gonna try to drill it out today.

My bike is a 1600, and it doesn't have that block off your talking about on the throttle side, but on the clutch side there is a left hand threaded stud welded in the bar end that protrudes out. This is what holds the stock left grip on.

This is so weird, my stock 08 Nomad bars do not have anything in them but the stock Nomad bars I bought on Ebay for Cindy's bike had a nut welded on the end on the clutch side.
I hack sawed it off

I run into this as I am in the process of installing handlebar grip heaters. I was going to wait until I was completely done to do a write up but better say something here now to help out with this project and post pictures as well.
I used a Dremel tool to cut around the handlebar just past the weld. Then I used a 7/16" drill bit to drill underneath to break the spot weld. Then I used channel locks to grab, twist and pull the rods out. They are both abour 6" long.

PS I am having trouble posting pictures right now but will do so later on

Yep, you right on about the weight inside the handle bar. Also found the spot weld up on the bottom side of the bar. Got another family thing to do tonight about will tackle this job in the morning. Thanks for the replies guys.

I've had 1700 bars on my bike since 2010, and on both bars (1600 & 1700) the left end looks like Amin's first picture, with the left hand threaded stud. The right side of both bars looks like Amin's last picture, just a hollow tube. 2 or 3 years ago I installed a set of HD grips, but the bars were too long from the switch housings to the end, so I had to cut 1/2" off each side. The right side I used a tubing cutter with a carbide cutter, but I had to take a hacksaw to the left side and cut thru the nut looking part. I know the bar is hollow, because before I mounted the 1700 bar, I filled it with liquid "Bar Snake".

It took some doing but I got the rod out. It was tac welded twice up in the bar right at an inch from the end. Checked the left side and it was the same. Also had the spot weld under the switch house. I would have cut the bar up past the tac welds but the throttle sleeve was already an inch longer at the end than the bar was. The Kuryakyn cruise control uses a wedge bolt in the end of the bar and I didn't want the bar to short to hold it correctly. Works good on a dry run. Hope the rains hold off tomorrow so I can try her out. Just put in the 1500 Meanstreak clutch spring also. Haven't tried it out yet either. Work and rain, work and rain........

Now where to mount the Gopro.

I put mine on the clutch reservoir but now that I have fairing I will have to find a different spot for the GoPro mount.

I bought the LCD view screen attachment for it so I can tell what it's looking at. I don't have the smart phone to blue tooth it. Should be here in the mail today.

Well, filming anything has been restricted to my daughters B-ball games and an indoor motocross race tonight. Seems if I'm off work it rains, and rains, and rains........

It'll probably end up on the helmet though. Also looked at inverting it under the light bar. Bought a remote for it yesterday so it can be anywhere and I can operate it any time.
