Let's get started

Okay gents (I apologize if there are any lady Vulcan drivers in our group. Let me know and I will amend the greeting)

I'm back from Ohio. Just so you know my mother is back in the nursing home and set up for hospice care. She will be comfortable and I pray that her end comes soon.

As Kris has already noted we need to find a location for our 2014 regional rally and I'm open to suggestions. I'm not that familiar with Washington and have only been to the Oregon coast a couple of times. Northern Idaho and western Montana are always good choices.

Post some suggestions here and we will pick a couple to discuss.

Thanks,
Bud

having been thru the same ordeal with my mother bud please know that your family will be in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.as for the 2014 rally I would prefer western wy.or anywhere in Idaho.having said that I am flexable and wouldn't be adverse to combining with the southwest group again at logan,ut.

How about NE Oregon? I'm thinking of the Hell's Canyon/Enterprise/Joseph/Baker City area. Some great riding around those parts.

Bud,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family as you move toward a peaceful end. My dad is facing a tough surgery to amputate his left foot at the end of the month (a good thing believe it or not) due to complications from his diabetes....so I know how family stuff can weigh on you...

Well, Charlie and I had recently done some preliminary work on this before the staff change, so take it for what it is worth. For sure do what you all feel works best....its all good no matter where you choose. I'll just share our thought process here and leave it at that.

Several SW members indicated if they rode up here for a NW rally, they wanted to include Washington in their visited states list, so we kept that in mind as we worked on some ideas. Greg pointed out the past places we've met, so we thought WA/OR might be a good choice this time around. We started with a list of five places and beat the drum for all of them, kicking one out every so often until we were down to two, both of which would be great choices.

I won't tell you which of these two I was leaning toward unless someone asks, but I will tell you the pros for each, which is mostly the riding in the two areas (I've ridden most all of it and it is stunning stuff). In no particular order....we narrowed it down to Lewiston, ID and The Dalles, OR. Lewiston offers "The Rattlesnake"...an awesome run down to Enterprise, OR and back for lunch. That is a famous stretch of motorcycle twisty heaven up and down a steep grade into a huge gorge that holds the Grande Ronde River. You also have areas to the east and north that offer some really nice riding. Lodging was never settled for Lewiston, but there is a lot to choose from there.

The Dalles is located right along the Columbia River on the Oregon side, right near the famous Celilo Falls (before they were covered by The Dalles Dam). Riding highlights from The Dalles are Mount St Helens (both west and east side), the Columbia River Gorge and Mt. Hood. The Celilo Inn would have been my choice of lodging were that to be the location. Some of the other places we kicked around were Chehalis, Ocean Shores, and Wenatchee, WA....all offering their own flavors....coastal or inland...the terrain and climate varies greatly up here. Just some ideas to kick around!

FYI: Hell's Canyon Rally in Baker City, OR takes place in mid July, e.g. this year it's happening July 12-15, 2013.

Good point. Probably wouldn't want to do it at the same time, all the hotels and good stops would be crowded.

Either of Kris's options are good.

If in The Dalles I could do some preliminary stuff as I go through there often. There are many great rides in the area and great diversity in scenery. Mt Hood, Mt St Helen's, high desert, Cascade Mountains, ride along the John Day river, have a cocktail while watching the windsurfers in the gorge, and not far from your favorite commune formerly occupied by the Bagwan in Antelope Oregon. Keep in mind it gets windy in the gorge in the afternoon. There are ways to get around it. There is great fly fishing as well.

Hell's Canyon and that whole Baker City area is pretty cool. Kris, I and a few others rode the area a couple years ago. Actually staying right in Enterprise or Joseph would be good too.

No preference here, they are all good.

Yea, well, maybe I was s bit premature with my post here. I've always thought that a great place to go would be central Idaho on hwy 12 along the Clearwater and Locksa Rivers. One road, lot's of twisties and awesome scenery. It was modified a few years ago with huge turn outs to accommodate huge loads that travel at night. It would be centrally located. Just not sure about the availablity of lodging because it is inside a national forrest. I know there is a lodge at three rivers.

Just thinking. But we need to talk.
