There is a wide range on the forum. Michelin II are well liked along with Meltzer. I had Mich II and got good mileage. I switched this past week to Shinko 777 so I could ride some whitewalls lol. So your answers will vary. Guess it could depend also on what type of rider you are. Peg scraper etc...

Michelin Commander II's. Love'm. 11,000 miles on the back and front when I hit something in the road and blew out the rear.... front is still going strong. I would guess I would have gotten at least 15-18,000 miles out of the rear had I not had the blowout. Living in southern AZ, rain is not a big issue, unless you're crazy and go out in the monsoon or get caught in a storm. The couple times I got rained on or came on wet roads, I felt very comfortable. One thing about our roads is that they build up a lot of rubber, oil and very slippery dust...not a very healthy situation. I've had no problems. Oh, yeah, my bike is an '06 Nomad 1600 FI.

What oil......which seat.......sounds like you're getting the newbie indoctrination, Vulcan-al!
I have been running a Shinko 777 HD (130/90-16) on my 05 1500 Classic. And the corresponding size on the rear too, for what it is worth. I'm pushing 15k miles on the front tire at the moment (and will be replacing it in the next day or three). For $80-$85 + $6 shipping, it is hard to beat if/when economics are a factor. My only complaint is it seems to cup rather easily, meaning by the time I rack up 4k to 5k miles on it, it is noticeable visually and by touch of hand. The first one that I ran up front ended up getting replaced around the 10k mile mark. It still had a lot of life on it but I went ahead and replaced it whilst putting on a new back tire that did not have life remaining. The only other tire(s) I have experienced on my Vulcan are the stock Bridgestones. I'm pretty sure both front and back were the originals that came on the bike. They were 10 years old when I bought the bike. I swore to myself that when this year (Spring 2017) arrived I would be trying Michelin Commander II on front and back. Besides being known for lasting an eternity, word is they are sooo sooo smooooth . When I bought my new back tire at the beginning of this season I found myself in tightass mode *sigh* and opted for Shinko instead of Michelin. Ditto for the front that I am about to mount. Shinko 777 HD = $90ish to my front door. Mich Comm II = $125ish.......so there ya go. I'm going to take this opp to bash Motorcycle Superstore. Though their prices are great and I've spent a lot of money with them, 3 of the past 4 times I ordered from them resulted in them NOT honoring their proclaimed "same day shipping" mantra. I'm done with them. Dennis Kirk will price match as will all the other big mail order shops. There! I feel better.

Michelin Commander II front and rear.
Last rear I got 22,000 km's. Current has 14,000 km's with plenty of meat left on the bone. Front has 24,000 km's but has only a few thou left at most going by eyeball. It will be changed over shortly. Rain - Bike runs a good line but I have not had to hard brake test it in the wet. Dry - no complaints It/they are a heavy tyre but it has made no/little impact to fuel economy. Pete. |

I'm running Shinko's on my Nomad and Avon Storm 3D X-M's on my Meanstreak.
The Shinko's are a great cruiser tire, the mileage is better than many, and they perform great, especially in the rain. The Storm 3D's are a performance sport bike and sport cruiser tire that grip the road extremely well. I don't know about the mileage yet, but on a bike that get's thrown into corners, they're worth a hit in mileage. They balanced out almost perfectly without any weights, and with the Counteract Balancing Beads, they're as smooth as silk.

Replaced the stock tires on the new-to-me '07 1600 last year, they rode like crap (but they were 9-10 years old, too).
Replaced with the Metzler 888 "Ultra-Marathon". Price was reasonably middle-ground, and tire wear has been as expected. Living in Midwest corn country, the tires have suffered a lot of straight-line riding, but have held up well. 10,000 miles later, the wear bars are getting closer, but I'm hoping to finish out the season and save next tire swap for a winter month (another 2-3,000 miles perhaps). |
