Best rides in YOUR state?

I thought it might be fun to list some of the primo day rides in our respective states to give others an idea of what kind of riding is available where you live.

I'll break the ice...

Yarnell Hill (AZ 89) Loop:

Starting from the Phoenix area, take US 60 NW to Wickenburg, about 75 miles from downtown. At Wickenburg, take AZ 93 N to the junction with AZ 89, about 7 miles. Go E on AZ 89 through Congress, up Yarnell Hill through the towns of Yarnell and Peeple's Valley. Stay on AZ 89 for about 30 miles and you'll enter Prescott, at about 5300'. Prescott is a cool old west town with a famous block known as Whiskey Row. Lot of bars and excellent places to eat. Leaving Prescott, you can head across the Chino Valley and over Mingus Mtn to the mining town of Jerome, or you can stay on AZ 89 and go to I-17, take I-17 south to Phoenix.

Total mileage: ~250 miles
Elevation change: 1100' up to 6000' and back down again
Difficulty: Lots of twisties from Yarnell Hill to Prescott.
Road conditions: Very good roads, higher elevations may have ice/snow during colder months.
Comments: watch for cops on Yarnell Hill, the sports bikers are a gold mine in speeding tickets. This is a very popular biker destination on the weekends, especially during the summer. It's 10-15 degrees cooler in Prescott than in Phx.

Best rides in YOUR state?

Highway 1, 4, 9, 36, 41, 49, 50, 70, 88, 89, 108, 120, 140, 168, 198, 245...and those are just the few I know. California is just full of good MC roads. I couldn't possibly pick the best one.

I am particularly partial to 108 (Sonora Pass), 4 (Ebbett's Pass) and 120 (Tioga Pass) though.

Wow this is really hard. I'm going to exlude Southern Utah only because its more than a day ride from my house even though Highway 12 is probably one of the most scenic. Northern Utah is full of great rides. Most of the really nice ones are only open in the summer time after they clear the snow. The Nebo loop is one of my favs. You can ride from salt lake city all the way down to Nephi, without even getting on the freeway. Take redwood road all the way down west of Utah lake to elberta. Goshen Canyon (west of I-15) wiil take you from Elberta into Mona and then Nephi. Go under the Freeway and get on the east side of I-15 and the Nebo loop will take you up quite high and drop you off in the Spanish fork area. Here's a map on the motorcycle roads site http://www.motorcycleroads.us/roads/ut_nlr.html

Wolfman,

I was meaning to tell you when I was in Utah I rode up to Park City on Sunday morning, then up to the top of Guardsman Pass. Then I went back down to P.C. and took US 40 through Heber City and up to Strawberry Reservoir. I'd have kept going to Duchesne, but I was short on time and had to get back to town. Nice ride, temps were decent and the pine trees smelled great!

That 40 is a nice ride too. There are a couple of canyons that run between parleys, hennefer, and Morgan that are great too.

Like the East Canyon Road? That's a nice ride. Wolf Creek Pass is good, too.

I got lost. I think I took a wrong turn just west of Rutland. How do I get back on US7 from here?

At the price of gas you might want to check the map and compass a little bit more carefully in the future. From Salt Lake City, go east on I80, eventually turns into I90, approximately 2,248 miles back to Rutland. (It gets a little confusing in New York so check the map again for the correct highways to continue eastbound. ) Choose either north or southbound US7 from there. Continuing east another 37 miles will put you back in Pomfret ;) :) If you get to I89 or I91, you have gone too far. :)

Okay, so I had nothing else to do this afternoon and spent some time with the mapping program. Kind of interesting overall, it did give me an idea as to where you live. Maybe someday I'll get out to that part of the country. :)

No good twistie or scenic roads around me for 100 miles. The only thing good for these roads is if you want to go fast.

You must live in Eastern Colorado, then?

Thank you Beeze. I was wondering how long it would take somebody to come up with a response like that. You never disappoint!
