Adjusting Headlight

I found the PDF shop manual for my 05 1500 Classic out on the interwebs. Whilst browsing with no intent, I came across the headlight adjustment section. It reminded me I hadn't ridden at night yet. One thing I always do with a "new" bike is tweak the headlight aim.

After Saturday's all day ride I rolled into town and noticed the low beam didn't have near enough throw for my liking. When I pulled into the garage I decided to adjust it based on the beam hitting the garage wall. Ideally I would be out on the back roads "doing it the right way" but had a good idea that I could get it pretty close by judging how the beam hit the garage wall.

So I peeked at the bezel and see the philips head screw on each side of the bezel. Actually they are on the chrome ring if I rcall. Left/right adjuster on the right side, up/down on the left side. I found the screw to be so tight that it wouldn't budge. Damn. While pondering just wtf might be the deal, I noticed a hole on each side of the bezel. Since the phillips head didn't budge, maybe I "misremembered" what the manual had depicted. Perhaps the small holes (slightly bigger than my screwdriver shank) are where the adjusters reside. I probed around with my screwdriver trying to feel a screw head. I went a couple inches deep into the hole and didn't encounter anything relevant.

Ya, I know, read the manual again, dummy and I'm going to pull it up right now. If my first assumption that the phillips heads are the adjusters, why would they be so tight? I bore down with my screwdriver somewhat firmly and it didn't budge. The tip hopped right out of the screw head.

I have nothing of value to add, but this part needed to be quoted.

Oops, lysdexia. Flip flopped my adjusters and mistakenly referred to the "bezel". Er, bucket. Bucket. The "endless black holes of irrelevance" are in the bucket. The phillips head screws were in the trim ring. If my job didn't have me out of town I would waltz down to the garage and monkey with it.

Ok, now that I have had my fun...if my memory is right...I sold my Nomad for a Voyager...the screws you are looking for are at about 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock.

Yessir, helped big time. It is the black holes of irrelevance that are relevant after all. I admit my patience was thin having just rode all day - twice in heavy downpours - stressful but FUN! I didn't feel like grabbing my spectacles and a flashlight and peering into them. Do they require a phillips or flatblade?

LOL the phillips heads on the trim ring are for cracking into the headlight. Duh.

So when you went into the holes a couple of inches you are saying you didn't go in far enough? Story of my life.

Apparently I did not go deep enough. They say it isn't the size of the sub but the motion of the ocean. Haha.

As I mentioned, I'm out of town for my job, home Friday evening. What sort of head is on the adjusters? Flat blade, phillips? Small or normal size?

Seems like a lot is being made out of two screws. Take the headlight ring off and grease the 2 screws, put it back on and adjust the light. Phillips screws are easy to turn once the screws are greased.

Phillips, not R & P.
