Running rough and backfiring

Update: after all the input and trying to track down various "could be" problems I was ready to throw in the towel. (really) In reading these and other posts I know trying to find a particular problem is frustrating. I had already disconnected my PCIII and via the mfg. decided it was faulty (vintage 2001) The bike ran crappy with it more than without it. I avoided buying another fuel processor until last week. There seemed to be no other logical options. Had a Cobra FI2000 shipped to my brother in OR. as they would not sell me the adjustable model here in CA. Installed it an hour ago and I am grinning ear to ear right now. What a difference. I know it needs to be fine tuned via the "macmac" fine tuning instructions but this is great. The previous crazy absurd backfiring and loud (really loud) exhaust noise made riding the bike a pain in the ***. This is the way I remember my old '99 Nomad acting. Sweet. Thanks for all the input guys. To others who may experience similiar problems, consider a new fuel processor. My PCIII was old and faulty. Looking forward to the fine tuning and even bettering the ride more.
