Memory improvement course

Two old guys are reminiscing about their army days and got stuck on remembering the name of their squad leader. The first gentlemen says "Heh, just give a minute. I have been taking these memory improvement courses and they teach you to associate something with what you are trying to remember. I am thinking of a flower, usually red, and has thorns on the stem." The second gentlemen says "Rose?"
"Yes! Hey Rose, what was my army squad leaders name?"
