Opinion on upgraded Metzler tire size for rear?

Wondering what are some opinions on upgrading the rear tire on the Nomad from the standard 150/80-16 to the 160/80-16. I understand that the tire will be somewhat wider, but also heard rumor that tire will also be somewhat taller? I'd like to hear all sides of the story when it comes to deciding if I should go widder or stay standard.... Pro's/Con's?????? thanks again in advance fellas!

I'm assuming you have a 1500. The stock 1600 rear tire is 170/70 x 16 which can be uprgraded to a 180/70X16. A 160/80 would be a little over 1/2 inch taller + 10mm wider than a 150/80. Don't know how much clearance there is on a 1500.

The first number references width of tire in mm's. The second number is a percentage of the width that measures sidewall. 3rd number is rim size

After having two bad Metzeler rear tires, and yes I had 40# in them, I went with the 160/80/16 Elite 3 and am happy with it. At around 14 to 15K miles with both tires the Metzeler tires looked like they were going to come a part. I only have 10,000 on the Elite 3, but am really happy with it. I was told the grip isn't as good, but I haven't made it slip yet. Of coarse I don't have a race bike, but it does get rode hard enough to slip if it was going to. If your concerned about a matching front, I went with the Elite 3 130/60/ 16 and I think it handles better then with the 150. Just by looking at it, it is hard to tell it is smaller and the load range is ??850#s I think. I'd have to go out and look, but it is sufficient. AND it's cold out there.

I am also running the Metzeler on the rear. Went with the taller tire then stock. My bike is the 1600 and have no problems with clearance. It even helped bring the speedometer more in line. I have close to 6K on them and do not show any wear.

I think the clearance is the same between the 1500 and 1600 but rim widths are different, Im sure the 1600 has a wider rim. There is a picture on another forum showing a 205/60/16 car tire on the rear of a 1600 Nomad. He says it fits with about 1/16" clearance and absolutly no modifications He seems to like it but I don't think its something I would switch to.

This may have been posted before, but here is a good tire size calculator to compare different tires. http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...foTireMath.jsp

Wow! I too am considering doing the stage 1 Metzler upgrade to my 1500 rear tire in a few months, even though I'm not gay, as eloquently stated by an earlier poster.

I just bought the Metzler 880's 180/70 HR16 Rear and the 150/80 H16 front tire a few thousand miles back. I will never buy anything else in the future. The difference was immediately noticeable with respect to ride, comfort, handling and etc. Though the rear tire is a bit bigger than stock, I experienced zero problems.
