The 2009 National Rally

Any of you all planning to ride to Custer?

I am seriously thinking about it. It's about 600 miles from where I live here in Gowrie, IA. An easy day and a half. Or one day for you lead butts.

If I go, I don't want to take the interstate highways. I figure across Nebraska, north to Custer. Maybe further north to SD, then Minnesota, then south to home. I'd sure like some company.

BnG; I have all intentions of going; however I will be trailering my bike to get there. I plan on getting there a day or two ahead of the "group"; and possibly staying beyond a day or two.

I live in Northern Illinois and clearly will be crossing through your area. If it would be that you plan on traveling on the same time-period as I; then we could connect and follow.

I talked briefly with another member from my area about trailering his bike with mine if he was interested in going. If he chooses not to; my trailer would have another spot for a bike.

I know it is a bit early yet; and I wouldn't want you to "bank" on my plans yet; but it is a thought in the event any of it could work out.

Let's stay in touch. I have a trailer too, so that is an option. We'll see what happens when the time gets closer. BnG

If I go, I will ride out. I went out there a couple years ago by car on rt 20. It was 700 miles from my house. Valentine is a nice place to stop.

Roadman; we should be sure to connect prior to the trip to see if we would be able to follow one another.

Just an idea to help in case someone needs assistance along the way.

It sounds more and more like that is the only way I will be going as well. I have never trailered a running bike in my life. I guess everyday can't be xmas.

BnG,
I will be heading out sometime late afternoon on Monday the 15th, we are planning on taking the scenic route. You are welcome to join us for the ride.
We will probably ride for a few hours in the evening and then head to Custer bright and early on Tuesday.
How's everything in the big city of Gowrie? I spent some time there starting the ethanol plant up a couple of years ago.

kioti; At this time I had planned on trailering my bike out to Custer. I planned on leaving on Sunday to get out there as soon as possible. I plan on riding around that area for a couple days ahead of the group -- covering a few of the "rides" to check them out.

There is another member, Roadman, that has planned on going as well; and will be trailering his bike also. I am not sure if he is leaving on Sunday or not; but I believe there was mention of he and I meeting-up to follow each other out there.

Starting in April I will post my final plans so others will know for sure in case they care to follow out.

We have decided we are going to take the LOOOONG way to Custer, down though Nebraska and ambling out across southern Nebraska to Wyoming and into Custer.
I am hoping to show up in Custer sometime Monday afternoon.
I have 3 other ride's tagging along including my wife on her trike.
Being a Flatlander I can't wait to get into Custer.

Is it June yet!!!!

See ya all there!!!!!

The 2009 National Rally

We'll be beelining North from Houston TX and I am looking at catching the Sandhills Scenic Byway on my way through Nebraska. Sandhills runs from Grand Island to Alliance. Only another 140 miles from Alliance to Custer via 385. Can anybody give a scouting report on this road?

Thanks

LW,

I lived in North Platte for years which is just south of that. Hwy 2 from GI to Alliance is a nice road. At that time of year, it should be nice and green. You will drive right past the edge of Nebraska's National Forest (Yes, a forest in the middle of the sandhills). The road from Broken Bow, Dunning, Thedford, and Mullen is extremely nice. However, fill up with gas when you can.

The next nice stretch is on 385 just as you begin closing in on Chadron. That is absolutely gorgeous when it is green.
