Do Your Homework....don't go to jail

Many of us legally carry concealed handguns while riding. It is our right to do so while permitted in our home state and in reciprocating states. Please research state laws in advance before getting on the road. Any of us could wind up like this unfortunate guy by crossing into a state that doesn't reciprocate. It appears that in New Jersey, a permitted non-resident can't have an unloaded and locked gun in his vehicle. The same would apply for an unloaded handgun in your saddlebag and especially concealed on your person. He's got an uphill battle on his hands. I hope the NRA is persistent in lobbying for his release and dismissal of the conviction.

Do Your Homework....don't go to jail

I have a book called "Travelers Guide to Firearm Laws of the Fifty States."
I would recommend it to all who carry and travel out of your own state.
I would also recommend getting a Utah Carry permit as it is recognized in about 30 other states.
Getting back to the post.
New Jersey is a very draconian state as far as guns go.
The book I have says, through travel, with no interstate stops, is permitted if the weapons are unloaded and secured in the trunk.
NY State's law is even harsher. If you travel straight through the state with no stops, you are legal if your gun is in the trunk, unloaded, and locked in a case. The minute you stop, anywhere in the State you are subject to prosecution by the state authorities.

TC,

The days of getting a CC in one state while living in another is quickly coming to an end. Several states (including Colorado) are proposing legislation that if you live in a state, that is where your CC must come from or they won't honor it.

I'm glad you said it TC. Utah is the place to get your ccp if you plan on traveling. When I got mine I would say 75% of the group was from out of the state.

Kentucky,Idaho,Indiana,Oklahoma,Arizona,Tennessee, Missouri,Utah,South Dakota and Alaska extend automatic recognition under law to other states permits.
But as you state, these laws are changing all the time. One must keep track of the states they plan to travel in.
As of this writing the states covered by Utah's permit are, Alabama,Arkansas,Delaware,Georgia,Louisiana,Minnes ota,Mississippi,Montana,New Mexico,Nevada,North Carolina,North Dakota,Ohio,Pennsylvania,Texas,Virgina,Washington and Wyoming.
Along with the above states, the following states will honor your Utah permit if you are a resident of Utah.
Colorado,Florida,Kansas,,New Hampshire,South Carolina and West Virginia.
I live in New York State and I just applied for a Utah permit as my NYS permit is only accepted in Montana and Texas.

Open the Louisiana State Police link below and scroll down to the US map which is nearly at the bottom. 11 states don't honor a LA permit with New Mexico and Iowa having not responded yet. So that is 37 states honoring a Louisiana permit. New York's permit reciprocates in very few states because very few states recip in New York. LEO here actually want you to carry if you are legally permitted but God help you if you get caught with a concealed weapon and no permit.

Mitch, I don't believe NY State recognizes any other states permit.
Do you have to reside in Louisiana to get a permit from there?
I took the Utah course here in NY.

Can you guys even own a pistol up there?

OK, I found this while searching pistol qwnership in Canada.
There are only 4 justifications for restricted weapon ownership: target shooting at a registered club; collecting; employment; or defence of life.

Most permits are issued for the first 2 scenarios.

In order to transport a restricted weapon, you must obtain an Authority to Transport certificate.

So the way I understand it, even if you had a Utah permit, you couldn't transport your gun to the states. Or am I missing something?

Here is another good site click on your state for laws also shows reciprocity states. Please do your homework we want this to be a positive picture of gun ownership.

Yes Tim.....you do have to be a resident. If I move out of state I have to surrender my CHP.

This is a good website that keeps up with changes in State Law as it applies to CC. Don't leave home without checking it.

We can own them if you do all the paperwork, they try to make it inconvenient as they can. I do have some as collector status, they are not supposed to leave the house without transport permits. If you are a club member you can take it to and from the club.
If I could get a CC permit Id just buy a gun in the states when Im down there, and keep it there. I wouldn't dare try to bring one back across the border, although you probably could legally if you had all the proper paperwork. We can buy guns in the states and bring them back. Longuns are not a problem at all, but Ive never looked into what is involved to import a handgun.

The frustrating thing about this case is, as I understand it, he was legal. He was moving back home from Colorado. He called the authorities and asked how to transport his weapon, and then followed their advice.

It's a long story, and one where the judge involved made up his own version of the "law". Hard to believe that kind of Bull S*** can go on in the U.S. :(" title="" border="0"/>

Glad to see that 23 other states honor Alabama's permit. At least we must be doing something right.

I remember back in 1984 when I rode my Goldwing from Mississippi to Fort Devens, MA and when I crossed the state line there was a warning that you could be carrying any weapons. I had not taken a gun with me as I was going to be on a military installation and they tend to frown on carrying guns. Just thought it unusual that Massachusetts would have a sign stating no weapons. Don't know if it has changed in the past 26 years or not.
