A shock question

Hi I was wondering if anyone knows if a shock from a 1999 Nomad can be re-built? It wont take air or hold it.I believe there is a oil seal in it.I priced a new one at the local dealership and it was a shocking surprise (excuse the pun) $588.00 Canadian pesos. If it cant be rebuilt the I will turn to a salvage yard I guess. Thanks for your assistance, Nomad Dad.

Buy a pair of aftermarket shocks.
Someone will probably be along to give you the part number.

Try it and see.
Here is a link to how to take them apart.

Try changing the Schrader valve.

If it doesn’t hold air after that, you’re wasting your time.

The oil change is just like changing the oil in the forks, it won’t affect the shocks ability to hold air.

OR
Taken from a very old thread.

"I went a different route, and bought a set of new-take-off Harley touring shocks on ebay from a company that does trike conversions on new Harleys. They are almost identical length, and hold more air volume. I only had to change out the isolator bushings to fit them on. So far I'm very happy with them, and cost was 50.00 plus shipping."

Hi thanks for the reply but it looks as if though the shocks cannot be rebuilt according to the link you gave me.

Just like changing a valve stem on a tire.

Wait, that's the correct term for the valve stem.

Hi again so you mean to say to just change the needle valve? Or some how get the whole valve out of the shock? This is all new to me.Im not afraid to try things but just want to know I'm not fishing around in the dark.Would be nice if I could get the old one working.I could try and get one from a salvage yard also. Thanks for your replies.

I think the suggestion is to change the Schrader valve in the valve stem.
Some dust caps have a slot in them to unscrew the Schrader valve from the valve stem.
If not them you can buy the tool at an auto parts store.
Some tire gauges also have the slot.
