[A message that was forwarded to loafer.]

Scenario 1:

Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.
1957 -
Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2010 -
School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario 2:

Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1957 -
Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up best buddies.
2010 -
Police called and SWAT team arrives - - they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario 3:

Jeffery will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1957 -
Jeffrey is sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt the class again.

Scenario 4:

Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.

Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a succesful businessman.
2010 -
Billy's Dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their Dad goes to prison. Billy's Mom has an affair with the psychologist.

Scenario 5:

Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school. .
1957 -
Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock.

1957 -
Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.
2010 -
Pedro's cause is taken up by the state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diplma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 7:

Johnny takes apart left over firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1957 -
Ants die.
2010 -
ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents - - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's Dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

High School - - 1957 vs. 2010

We have become the educated idiots............

Locally Brown University comes to mind.

They now want to change Rhode Island and it's Providence Plantations which is the official state name to just Rhode Island, It seems that some people are offended because of slavery,

Subject: RHODE ISLAND AND ITS PROVIDENCE PLANTATIONS / todays rant

I am going to go on the record NOW that I am opposed to the request of a small vocal "minority" (no pun intended) to change the name of our great state.

It is too often that people sit by and let the few dictate what the many should do...like Brown University wanting to change the name of Columbus Day to...ACK... "Fall Weekend" or the yearly cry to do away with VJ Day because God forbid (can I use that phrase?) someone's sensibilities are offended because at an appropriate time, the United States used what was then considered to be an appropriate weapon to end a war that we did NOT start!

Fortunately the people of RI will not kowtow to Brown University (ahem...the founder of which was a slave owner and apparently as recently reported, an opium importer...hmmm, lets change the name of the school while we're at it) nor will they thus far, kowtow to the liberal bent of a liberal press merely to placate Japan...who if anyone has forgotten, sabotaged our planes, ships and military men and women (and their families). Yes, that was on December 7, 1941 fyi.

So here we are now with a group of people whose sensibilities are "offended" by the inclusion of the word "plantation" in the state name (and I am told not to overreact when someone stereotypes Italians as being gangsters!)

The definition of the word Providence (according to Webster's) is: 1) looking to, or preparation for, the future, 2)skill or wisdom in management, prudence: 3) the care or benevolent guidance of God or nature (there is that God word again...should we change the name of the Capitol City as well?)

Sounds to me like all pretty good things so far eh?

Webster's also defines Plantation. And it defines as follows: 1) Colony or new settlement (classified as archaic); 2) a area growing cultivated crops; 3) an estate,as in a tropical or semitropical region, cultivated by workers living on it; 4) a large , cultivated planting of trees (as in a rubber plantation).

I imagine that the folks in support of the name change will hop on definition 3 as being the reason for their movement and no one can deny that the "plantations" in the south utilized slavery and that slavery was a dark time in our history BUT it has nothing to do with an individual named Roger Williams who founded our state in search of religious freedom... and it is not defined as a place where people were enslaved!

The inclusion of the word plantation in our state name is not designed to dredge up visions of slavery and those who suggest it does are in a word (or two) full of it.

The proponents of this name change think that by doing away with the word plantation that the issue of slavery will disappear...wasn't it

said that if we forget the past, we are doomed to repeat it (paraphrasing here and I can not give credit where credit is due at this point in time).

Our name is not for sale and we should not succumb to the whims of a few to placate their need for attention and their want of attention

f or no other reason to complain - about something - anything.

Frankly, I am tired of hearing the same old arguments about "a word" that does not connote and is not meant to connote or foster slavery, slaves or a period of our history that was less than "civil."

We should not forget that freedom and dignity are paramount to our survival but we should not erase everything reminds 4 people of that time either...especially when THIS state was founded upon principles that we all hold dear...freedom, religious freedom, (not exclusion of religious terms - MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone...soon), freedom of the press, freedom of SPEECH etc... What this state was NOT founded upon was the belief in human slavery...so speak now...vote now (November actually) and vote NO, DAMN IT!!! We will NOT change our name. Send these folks packing...please!

Thanks...I needed a good rant..even it its not Friday.

Bill

If a nation forgets its past, it is doomed to repeat it... Winston Churchill.
Sounds like R.I. needs to annex itself to another state. N.H. ?

Good rant Bill. This is beyond educated idiocy. The left, progressives, whatever you call them are so focused on racism that they see it everywhere whether it's perceived by others or not. It's to a point where the word "racist" has been marginalized because of the flippant use of it.

As far as WW2, VJ Day and dropping the "bomb". Remember, we had to drop TWO "bombs" before they would surrender. It may sound harsh but when it comes to saving lives I'd rather it be American servicemen than enemy civilians. That's why they call it war.

Boy, ain't that the truth!

In 1976, we used to go deer hunting after school and would park our 4x4's in the school parking lot with our high-powered rifles in the gun racks. Nobody said a thing. Of course, we would never have even thought to remove them from our trucks while at school, because we didn't need guns to settle our differences back then.

Fast forward to 2009, and a 7th grader is suspended from a Queen Creek (AZ) middle school for drawing a crude picture of a gun on a sheet of paper.

In 33 years, we have lost our collective minds.

I think the ones that have lost their minds is the educators in the school systems whether it be University, College, High Schiool down to grade school. And the reason they're going that direction is fear of parental pressures and lawsuits. Couple that thought with politicians who also buckle under pressure and lawyers who look for any way to make a buck.

Why do you have to write a law 50 different ways when the boottom line is we all know right and wrong.

You nailed it Jimmy; the educators are the root of the problem, and they don't want to upset anyones right regardless of the outcome as you stated for fear of reprisals. The pendulum has swung way to far and needs to be corrected.
