Using a torque wrench.

I've often wondered, when the specs call for a torque of say 80 to 90 foot pounds, is it best to just torque to 80 or split the difference and go with 85?

If thats what they call for, anywhere in that range is adequate.
Id probably go to the max myself.

I'm with Steve. If it called for a range I would go for the max. It shouldn't break anything if their specs call for a range like that.

There is probably some slight mechanic error with the wrench. I too would just go for the max.

It also makes a difference if the threads are lubricated or not.

I usually tighten the bolts till they break, then back off a half turn.
