Motorcyclist killed in collision with SUV in Surprise

by Alexander Foote - Dec. 1, 2010 09:48 AM
The Arizona Republic

A motorcyclist died Tuesday around 6:30 p.m. after an accident at Bell Road and R.H. Johnson Boulevard, according to Surprise police.

The 37-year-old man on a 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle was headed east on Bell Road when he struck a 2002 Dodge SUV, which was driving west on Bell and turning left at the intersection, police spokesman Mark Ortega said.

The man, who police have not identified, pending notification to family, died at a nearby hospital. The woman driving the SUV was uninjured.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Bell Road was closed for about three hours after the accident.

Left turns in front of a motorcycle is the leading cause of fatalities of riders.

Both of CJ's posts were caused by a vehicle turning left into a bike.

Everyone must ALWAYS think of this when riding and have the mindset that every driver woke-up that day to specifically hit them on their bike...

I see complacency of riders all the time... and it is scary -- not that a skilled and well-prepared rider couldn't still be in an accident or get killed.

Sure hate to hear this. It is always the same thing, either someone turning left in front of a motorcycle or someone pulling out in front of a motorcycle. And I use the term someone loosely.

One of my biggest fears when riding, besides going around someone who has their cell phone to their ear is when I'm approaching a stopped vehicle with the left turn signal blinking. I automatically flip my high beam on and hope they are paying attention. Still makes me nervous though. In the last few months, I've had a few idiots wait at a stop sign until I'm nearly on top of them before they pull out in front of me. No one in sight behind me. Most of these are talking on their cell phone.

Rider courses suggest you should watch the wheels of the car for movement.

If the wheels are turning... the car is moving... whether they are looking at you or not...

Many believe you should look at the driver's eyes... but there are many stories of drivers looking right at what they run-into.

I try to watch the wheels also but it's pretty hard to tell from 100 yds away at 50 mph if the wheels are rolling when they aren't turned. At an intersection, I try to establish eye contact with the driver. Scares the heck out of me when they only glance my way and stare to their right or vice versa when they are on the left side of the intersection.

Right signal left hand turn is the worst me or any friends have experienced with fellow riders.

Speaking of dangerous situations the re-occurring dream I have, luckily haven't had it in yrs, is the situation where..........you're riding in the mountains...........no shoulder on the right side............road goes into a blind right curve...........sand and gravel washed on to the road............. and as you come around the turn your buddy has wiped out in front of you............you have no where to go except to avoid him and go into oncoming traffic........you avoid the oncoming car but lay the bike down........sliding across the lane,,,,,,hitting the wall after you slide through the opposite shoulder......flipping over the wall after your bike hits it and catapults you over...........the drop is over 1000 ft and you grab a tree branch and are hanging on for dear life.

Dream ends...............

Be careful out there............Always anticipate............
