Car Tire for 2006 Nomad for rear, riding 2-UP

Says it takes about 5 hours to change the seals ect back there. Is it really worth it?

How often do they need to be changed?

I only have 8k miles on the bike, but the CT will go 30K I'm sure, so is that why everyone suggested doing this?

It's definitely worth doing the swing arm service, especially if you find that very little grease was put in at the factory. Some have found almost no grease at all.

With that low mileage its probably ok so far, but if your installing the car tire it would be best to take the swingarm off and check everything just to make sure. Your seals are probably ok at that mileage also and you may not have to do anything with them until the car tire is due for replacement.

Like YellowJ said, they're not very generous with the grease. Without looking I believe the maintenance for the swing arm is 7k miles. If you could go back and read the history of how many people have performed the swing arm maint. and what they discovered, I wouldn't have to press the point. Personally, on my first Nomad I found very little grease and a lot of corrosion. The second had a little more grease and still some corrosion. I know you like I was in a hurry to get her back on the road. But, do yourself and the Nomad a favor and don't skip this one.

I was careful with the seals and reused them wiith no problems. Its suggested to replace them. I have two sets in my tool box ready for the next time I do the check.

From someone who knows, pulling the swing arm is quicker and easier than mounting that bigazz tyre. Tell 'im VulcanE, Bigdave.

You already have your tire out, and the final drive off. Now all you need to do is unpin the drive shaft, slide it out, and remove the swing arm pivot bolt, and let the swing arm down, and rest it on a 5 gallon bucket or something. With only 8k miles on it, I would reuse the seals for the swing arm, but I would put a good thin coat of good quality moly lube on the splines where the drive shaft mates to the output splines of the transmission, and put about two tablespoons of the same grease in the slip joint that mates to the final drive. Using the same grease, grease the needle bearings that are pressed into each side of the frame for the swing arm to pivot on, use your finger and really pack it down into/between all the needle bearings. Grease all the spacers (inside and out) and the long pivot bolt that mounts the swing arm to the frame. Then start putting it back together in the reverse order. Also make sure to put a thin coat of grease on the gears that mesh together to drive the rear wheel. Total time shouldn't take but about 1 hour more than mounting the tire under the bike.

ok perfect, thanks for the help. Looks like it doesnt add much time to the project.

Your right, with this nice new " Couch " going down the road, " Life is Good " now that I own this bike. What a great ride on it, Kawaski nailed it when they made the Nomad !

Some with relatively low mileage bikes have found rust in their swingarm bearings due to lack of lubrication. Check and service it now if at all possible.

I'm putting a new rear tire on mine soon and plan to do the service. It's been 21,000 miles since I last had mine apart.

I think I spent more time than that when I did mine the first time, and I didn't lose the little pin and spring that couples the driveshaft to the output shaft. Just take your time and be thorough.

I'll be able to do it much quicker this time around, I'm sure. It was about 125° in my garage in July '09 when I did it last.

This is one thing I need to do as well. The last time it was done was at 10K, and I'm at 28600 now. Still a little gunshy about pulling all that stuff off the bike though...

First time is time consuming, but after you have done it once, you'll be able to repeat the process in just a few hours. I've now done it to my bike and two other. It now takes me about 2 hours. Just DON'T loose the clip. That will ruin you day!

No, it takes as long as it takes. What's your hurry? Today's the first day of the rest of your life. They ain't no race up in here dawg! You gotta do it like you do a bottle of Glenlivet. Don't worry about how much time you have to drink it, unless your on brake at work, you pour it over ice and drink.

I talkes with my mechnic, and he said he will come to my house on a Saturday, a for around $100 bucks, go through it with me, and service it all and R7R the back wheel ( 205 tire) etc, and change the oil on the gear drive, and bike. He said he can do it all in about 2-3 hours, so for $100 bucks, I'm thinking of having him by my side, to help the first time, then do it my self from here?

Is everyone using a regular motocycle jock to do this?
