1700 Nomad Fairing Question

For those that have added fairings to the Nomad --

I have a 1700 Nomad with oversize lowers (homemade, not so different that Chucksters). I get some buffeting at highway speed, enough so there is some wind noise in the helmet. I think it is coming up over the tank. For those who have added a fairing, how much benefit is there in wind/buffeting reduction from air coming up over the tank? Did you need wind deflectors to get benefit? Is it worth adding wind deflectors (e.g. Memphis Shades makes some) to the windshield rather than going the whole fairing route?

I'm not necessarily looking for the "fairing look," though I've thought about it. I'm really looking for wind/buffeting control.

Happy and safe riding,
Dan

I have a 1500, but am willing to share. I have a Memphis Shades batwing with the extra air deflectors on the fairing. I also ride with engine guard chaps a lot of the time. With the stock fork lowers I still had a little buffeting, but put my Chuckster larger lowers back on and think I have it solved. Seems like every possible wind deflection piece is included in the mix, but it works for me.

If you go with a Memphis Shades fairing, I have been very happy with the windshield I bought from Long Ride Shields.

If you already have the larger lowers, perhaps the best next step would be the engine guard chaps.

Good luck with the journey.

I've got the engine guard chaps (Airlite) which help a lot in the Winter. When I take em off, I get a lot of air on my knees and some air up over the tank, even with large lowers. Looking to optimize air flow.

I find that the buffeting was reduced by the fairing. It also added protection for the hands. I had some issues with my bars, so I had to take it off (I have much taller ape hangers). If you're interested, I am selling a Memphis Shades Batwing with all the mounting hardware.

Can't speak for a Nomad, but I put a Reckless fairing on my 1500 classic. I found the buffeting was all in the height of the wind shield I made. I was surprised how the shape of the fairing pushed the air up and over, short shield or tall. Pouring rain at 65mph and a 12" shield. cars pulled off the road because the windshield wipers could not go fast enough and I could see just fine, looking over the shield. Not much water at all on my helmet visor.

You can stop the buffeting by adding a triple tree wind deflector. If you can make one out of plastic or metal.
Here is a link to one made for a Victory. They really work.

Recumbentbob this is exactly what I think causes most of thes buffeting problems. Do you have pics of these on a Vulcan?

No I don't but Bad Ace Billet makes them for a Victory they are plastic. Bad Ace also makes parts for Kawasaki vulcans. If you contact them i bet they could make one.
Or buy one for a Victory and trim it to fit since it's plastic.

Here is a photo of a homemade one in a Victory.
