Neutral finder???

I am writing on behalf of a friend of mine that has a 99’ 1500 Nomad.

His trouble is with starting. The neutral light does not come on when the bike is obviously in neutral. When he can get it started and its in neutral, then he puts the kickstand down it will shut off. It’s like the bike’s indicating system thinks it is still in gear.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Kip

It sounds like one of the switches is stuck or broken. The most likely switch is the kickstand switch, it gets bunged up with crud easily. Clean it and see if it helps. there is also a switch in the clutch lever as well, where the plug can work loose.

Would the kickstand switch affect the neutral light?

Neutral finder???

On the bevel gear drive cover at the bottom right is the sensor.

Check to see if the wire is still connected and not shorted. Next would be changing the sensor.

Part # 13151 at the following link.

The neutral light sending unit shouldn't make the bike stop when you put the kickstand down, it sounds like something is worn or faulty on those switches I mentioned earlier.

I was thinkong just the opposite. I thought the bike would stop if the switch was faulty?

If the switch does not send the signal that the bike is in neutral and we put the side stand down the bike should stop. It is as if the switch is indicating that the bike is in gear.
