Ah, the SR-71 Blackbird. There's one at the Hill AFB museum in Clearfield Utah. Even though they were declassified 15-20 years ago, a lot of the statistical data is still classified. Top speed, maximum ceiling, etc. It would have really been something to watch taking off or landing.

The first thing to know is that it is spelled P-L-A-N-E-S.

Plains are those wide open spaces down which the wind likes to sweep.

You get after me, but don't say anything about Brad spelling it P-L-A-N? And he's the one who started the thread... ::) ;)

If everyone had to spell and punctuate correctly to be a member of this forum, there would be about 5 members.

The air-museum in Tucson has one that I got to see about a month ago.

While my wife didn't really care much about it, I was rather thrilled to see it. I had never seen one before.

It is a lot bigger than I had imagined. Real cool

They used them in Korea when I was there. Kept them pretty much under lock and key. You better not even think about taking a picture of one. I think I did sneak a picture of one from a distance at Osan Air Base.

If I remember correctly, these planes (or plains if you're from Utah) when they were active, had to basically sit in like a 'drip pan', as the way there were built and of material that changed under speed and altitude, would drip fuel. I think it was because the material at supersonic speeds and altitude would actually change shape, so to speak. Would tighten up.

Does that make sense?

Signed,

Cliff Clavin
