Pegs Down\Boards Down?

I have heard several people mention "Pegs Down" and "Boards Down" here of late. I can surmise what they mean, in light of recent events, but could someone give a full explanation or some history.

Thanks,

Michael

I'm behind on posts, but sounds like the old "keep the rubber side down and shiny side up" !

I can't tell you the origin, but it's the biker's tribute to a fallen comrade. Similar to when a pilot dies, his squadron does a flyover in the missing man formation, or in JFK's funeral procession, they led a riderless horse with empty boots reversed in the stirrups. When someone in law enforcement dies they do a final sign-off over the police radio.

That's all it is. It's just a sign that shows respect for a fellow rider who has passed on. A symbol when we ride, that there's someone missing.

As already mentioned, it is putting your passenger pegs down in honor of a rider lost. Kinda like letting them ride on with you in spirit.

Vaccam, Thanks for asking the question. I was wondering about the details as well.

My pegs will be down in honor as well.

I was going to give a better definition, but this is better: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riderless_horse

I too, called the wife back home in Texas and had her put the passenger boards down.

Pass the word. Especially on Monday for Chucks Funeral Pegs/Boards Down.
As my friends for the Island of Jamaica will say "Respect" / "Bless".

I took a ride yesterday and my boards were down. In my mind it ment that Chuck's spirit was riding along.
Everyone has a little different take on the custom but I like this one the best.

I had originally thought that the caparisoned horse was a U.S. Cavalry tradition. If I am not mistaken any Cavalry soldier that dies gets such a type of funeral.

I thought so too, but the wikipedia article says something different.
