Throttle position sensor problems

Hi,Everyone I am new to this forum and I am looking for some input on a problem I have. I recently purchased an 09 1700 Nomad with 8200 miles on it after a short ride my warning light came on and displayed FI and showed ERR 11. After some research I found out that it meant I had a problem with the throttle position sensor. Does anyone have any advice on what I need to do. I cannot find a TPS listed in any of the MC parts sites all they are saying is the complete throttle body assembly. Also when I checked the service manual it dosen't say anything about changing the TPS only the ECU, throttle body assembly or the wiring Harness. Any Help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

The service manual has TPS procedure. and removal.
If you don't have the service manual I would suggest getting one.
You can probably download one free.

Glad to hear you have a service manual. Every one needs one any way. I hope it helps you for this issue. If not it still is handy to have.

the TPS is not meant to be tinkered with or replaced so is only sold as a complete unit

the tps is adjusted from the factory and is not adjustable after that --- those things are very sensative and u could cause a lot of problems if u tried to take it apart

on older cars we could make adjustments when needed but these bikes are to complicated --- i looked into it on my bike years ago but gave up because i didnt want to risk having to buy a new unit if i loused it up -- maybe u could find a used one

Yes sir, that is what it says in the service manual. I have located a used one out of a 2012 voyager it has the same part number as mine so i think that is what I am going to try. Thanks

While it's not unusual for a TPS to go bad, my first step would be to use some good electrical contact cleaner on the connector. As the bike is 10 years old and appears to not have been ridden much, the contacts in the connector(s) could have developed oxidation.

You may replace the TPS and fix the problem then, think it was a bad TPS when in reality you restored contact by unplugging and repluging the connector. The service manual has a procedure for using an ohmmeter to check the TPS. I would clean all the connectors, especially the multi-pin at the ECU to avoid any future problems.
