a rear tire on the fornt

Hi,
I recently had a dunlop K555 and a dunlop D404 fitted to the rear and front respectively of my 2007 Nomad 1600. I found that the front D404 is in fact a rear tire use only. The very pronounced tread is the same direction as for the rear as is the arrow of rotation. Should I have it reversed for the braking forces and if so how would this affect the water clearing ability which I assume is the same for back and front in normal use, ie, if I change the direction of the tread will it not clear water in the way it will now?

From what I know....riders using a rear tire on the front reverse it. I know Jared (UtahMotorcyclist) does this...and I've seen others too.

I just put a Continental Conti Tour rear tire on the front of my '05 Nomad. It is marked from the factory to be reversed if placed on the front. Havent rode in rain yet to try out the "water clearing". After 500 miles of riding I do like it. Seems to be less prone to follow cracks in road, handles railroad crossings and the like very well, took care of occasional wobble that I attributed to loose steering bearings, and it doesnt hurt that it looks cool (with my Bridgestone Turanza ct on the rear!)

The logic behind reversing the tire direction is due to the carcass of the tire being designed to handle the expected forces placed on the respective tire. The front has to withstand braking force, but no acceleration forces. The rear needs to withstand torque from acceleration, and minimal braking. This would indicate that unless the tread pattern itself is highly directional, that the rear tire should be reversed if mounted on the front of the bike.

I've had a D404 rear flipped on the front of my 03 for over a year. It started singing very soon after mounting and is cupping now.

As far as rain, I've ridden is some biblical downpours and haven't experienced any issues.

So would you suggest leaving it unreversed?

I've seen them mounted both ways.
Metzler used to have a statement on their web site saying to reverse a rear tire when mounted on the front but they have removed that statement from their web site.

So this is a confusing issue for me.
I run a front tire on the front and a car tire on the rear.

I think this is what most refer to:

"It is not allowed to mount front tires at rear wheels.
In case you intend to mount a rear tire on a front wheel it has to be assembled contrary to the driving direction declaration (direction of the arrow at the tires� sidewall)."

Here is a picture of a front and rear tire. You can see that the tread patterns are the exact opposite.

Absolutely not.

But it also isn't the answer to all of your tire issues.
