Blacked out license plate

I notice on a lot of boards when some people post pictures of their bikes, they black out the plate. I've always wondered why?

Blacked out license plate

Guess they are afraid someone might steal their identity. Heck I've got nothing to hide.

Dave feeling OK?

License plates are out there, so maybe they don't want stalker's finding where they live?

I suppose that someone might be paranoid enough to worry someone might find where they live and steal their bike, or possibly break into their house if they see on a post they have left-town for a trip or something.

I don't know how easy it is to look-up someone's address via a license-plate number... I would think that it wouldn't be something someone could do... at least not easily. However, I am sure there are ways to do that.

I don't know that you can find any information on anyone from their license plate number. You can go to the court house and if you know someone that works in that department you might find out who owns the vehicle. It isn't given out to just anyone. It is one thing in life that doesn't worry me.

I once scratched another car in a parking lot. (Not on purpose). I called the State Police barracks and told them I wanted the other persons name and address so I could call and make it right, They gave it to me.

Blacked out license plate

I never understood the why to that. My plates are visable every where i drive/ ride, so why should I be worried in a photo?

I sort of mistook the thread, as on line as of late i have seen plates really blacked out to match the paint of a car. A black car with all black trim to include the plates! You can read the plates sort of, but they are the same finish as the rest of the car. I have no idea how that can be.

Is this legal?

It wouldn't be in Illinois. Law here does not allow for any modification of license plates at all. In fact, you are not allowed to use a plastic cover over your plates... although I see that occasionally. It is illegal and reason for a ticket if the cop wants to.

Also, you can be ticketed if your plates become "un-readable". I know this because my wife's plates were replaced free by the state due to faulty manufacturing, whereby the paint was expected to peel off someday -- making it un-readable.

They stated if she didn't order the free replacements they could ticket her later if her plates become un-readable. So... we ordered the new free-ones. ;)

I could never see the sense in blacking it out either.
