Fuel pump info

I found this tidbit on the Delphi Vulcan Riders Forum and thought I'd post it here, since it contains some very useful information.

Quote:
hey, i thought i'd pass along what just solved my fuel pump whine... a plugged venting hose.

somebody told me they found this tidbit buried somewhere on gadget's fixit page. under your gas cap there are two small venting holes. make sure both are free and clear by blowing thru some compressed air or running a wire down them like a roto-rooter. one of mine was plugged. since the clean-out, the fuel pump has not made the sounds again.

if you've got a whiney fuel pump (other than just prior to start-up of course), then check out you vent hoses.

oh, almost forgot...for those who DO need a new fuel pump, its the exact same pump found on a 1989 mitsubishi galant (i kid you not)! you can get one for 140 bucks at an auto parts store. just google "vulcan 1600 fuel pump from mitsubishi" and you'll find the thread at another vulcan forum.

Thats real handy to know. I always suspected that the fuel pump was a more commonly used pump in some other applications.

I wish I had known that last year before I bought a used one.
Cleaning the vent seems like it would have been a lot cheaper. ::)

I just added the information about the Mitsubishi fuel pump to the technical section under the "Parts Lookup" area.

Good info. Mine is still whining so I will check this out. I would swear mine is a mechanical issue with the pump because it is much louder with the gas cap opened.

I've been a member of the Delphi Kawasaki Vulcan Forum since 2002 and have always enjoyed the sharing of information and friendship, just like we do here. Like Sachmo sang..."It's A Wonderful World!"

I think the whining is a siphoning/pumping noise issue, not bad pump motor bearings.
There is a large o ring inside the pump assembly. I think the noise comes from that o ring that is not sealing completely. The above info regarding the Mitsubishi pump from a Galant is excellent. Now, who is going to pay $140 to check it out ????

Please post your findings.

I take it then this is for 1600 only? The 1500 pump is different.

I would imagine that the 1500 pump is also a Mitsubishi, If someone had access to their catalog they may be able to cross it to the Nomad pump.

Maybe Trip can ask Kawasaki, when he's at their show in Vegas, why they need to mark the replacement pump's cost up so high.

You could buy a complete tank on Ebay for a lot less than that.
Id search high and low for a subsitute before I spent $700.00 on a pump.
