564 miles without.....

On my recent trip I had the pleasure of riding 564 miles without going through a traffic light. State highways and roads less traveled are where my bike and I like to go. On one stretch I went 78 miles without seeing another vehicle!

564 miles without a traffic light is a new recored for me.

Do you have a method of knowing the condition and speed limits of these type road before riding them?

When I am planning a trip I will Goggle state highways and see what I can find. I will also use Goggle Map and "drive" part of a remote highway just to see what it looks like. I have had to turn around after going 40 + miles on a county road with it goes from pavement to gravel. That in fact happened to me on the way to the SW Rally this summer.

I have saved that map for future reference. WY is one of our favorite states and 564 miles with no traffic is good enough for me to hang around there. Haven't been to Nebraska, that's another reason to check that stretch out. Thanks for the tip!

Hang on, what about gas stations and campgrounds on that route?

Thanks again.

I can barely go a 1/4 mile around here without seeing lights or stop signs.

Elvis - if you make it to NE let me know as I would love to ride with you. But, I can tell you that most of the folks I know on this site don't care for the wide open spaces of central and western NE (and KS) and E WY because of the lack of twisties and the lack of trees.

In WY most small towns have gas stations. Same for NE. However, in the sand hills of NE (on the route I outlined) you in fact go through two "towns" that are County Seats that do not have gas stations nor grocery stores. Unless I know for a fact where a gas stations is, I do not pass one up after 60 miles.

No problem with campground. Pvt, State Parks and USFS.

Hi Bill,

Riding with a former ranger would be so cool. Let's see what the next summer will bring.

When it comes to terrain, I like variety, a little bit of everything. But I really enjoy the open spaces, rolling hills, deserts, remote and isolated places.

You've been doing a lot of riding recently, is there another trip on your calendar this year?

Cheers,

E.

Elvis - If I don't get called to work (I work for FEMA on a part time/as needed basis) I will travel from here south and west into KS. Then hooking south and east to Antlers, OK for the rally. From there I want to go to Natchez, MS then north on the Natchez Trace Parkway. Then going south and east into E. TN where I want to ride the Cherohala Skyway
- http://www.cherohala.com/ - then on to Cherokee, NC and back over the Great Smoky Mt. NP. From there I will work my way back to NE.

My plan is to be on the road for two and half weeks.
