Man dies after motorcycle hits moose
Last Updated: Monday, November 16, 2009 | 9:58 AM MT Comments22Recommend20CBC News

A 79-year-old Fort Saskatchewan man died Sunday evening after his motorcycle (Goldwing) hit a moose on Highway 28A south of Gibbons, Alta.

RCMP said the motorcycle struck the moose around 7:30 p.m., throwing the driver onto the roadway.

The car that was behind him also hit the moose and then struck the motorcycle.

The motorcycle driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released. The car's driver was not injured.

A bike is simply no match for a moose. Thank God I don't have them around here!!

Cars and trucks aren't good matches for moose, much less motorcycles. Many drivers of vehicles are killed when the long legged moose crash through the windshield after impact. We have quite a few coons and armadillos down here and they are always on the move at night. Won't spot them until the last moment.

Since I retired January 1 I do not do any night riding. When I worked my shift was 4:30 PM until 3:00 AM. During warm days I rode most every day. Going to work was great but that ride home. Deer do some strange things here in Alabama. I hit two leaving work one morning. Luckily I was in a car that early morning. Didn't hurt me but that little Mazda took a pounding to the front. Ended up trading it in on a 2005 Buick.

That sucks psycho.

I don't try to stop for cats and small dogs and clipped a jackrabbit in Wyoming. I took a crow for a "lower body injury" in hockey speak. I have come close to deer, one bear and a bison in in Yellowstone. All the last ones would continue to give me nightmares if I didn't impair my memories through a misspent youth and have learned to brake under control.

Rest in peace WingRider.

Moose aren't a big threat here in AZ. Mostly coyotes, javelina, and the occasional elk in the high country. I'd rather not meet an elk while riding.

Javelina CJ. Years back I went hunting those little wild pigs with pistols.

Moose are tough on vehicles, Ive seen a few wrecks here and usually you don't come out alive.

Any four legged animal is a risk, be it cat or cow. Driving a MC at night is VERY risky business. I have done it and will continue to do so, but I know the risk.

This is too bad.

working nights I see my share of deer, I even had a bear run accross in front while on the bike. At work I've seen as many as 36 deer in one trip around the campus.
