Off to Alaska (back from-updated)

Tomorrow morning first thing I am on a plane for Alaska. First to Anchorage, then hopping another flight to Kodiak. I'll be there for a week, returning late next Saturday night (Sept. 18th). I'm going there to write an article for an outfitter (Kodiak Rasperry Island Remote Lodge) about their freshwater Coho fishing.

'Tis the fall salmon season.....so riding is now officially on the back burner for awhile. Had a great riding season though and covered many states, a couple provinces and about 8000 miles along the way!

Sooo....I will be offline for a bit, but will check in upon my return and post a few pics of what fishing in Alaska is all about !

Watch out for the bears on Kodiak.............they fish also. Have fun and enjoy the trip.

Hey all....I have returned from the great white north! What a great trip... . The weather was awesome....the fishing was awesome....and the dining/drinking was awesome! Lots of silver salmon on the fly rod, halibut, Snow Crab, tons of whales, otters and bears....just incredible. If you have never been there.....Alaska just has to be on your bucket list.... ;) !

This is where I went and would highly recommend to anyone...

WOW !! Looks like a nice place. When are we going up? I'd love to make a trip up there for a few days. Maybe we could get a KawaNOW grp. together and get a whole different feeling about another kind of chrome. You got some nice fish Kris. It's been about 3 yrs. since I did any river fishing. Did you fly fish only or did you use an open face reel on the river. Roe? ??? wool?

We were 80% fly fishing....but I did toss some eggs under a float when things got slow. You have never seen so many fish in your life as are up there right now!

Great pics. Really like the one you are fighting the fish (or he is fighting you).

I have been to a similar place in Alaska (Whalers Cove in Angoon). I agree...Alaska should be on everyone's bucket list...very impressive...much like Canada. I remember going on a bear watch outing with about 5 guys and 1 guide with a shotgun. We came upon a whole herd (bunch, school, ???) of bear. I can remember thinking about two things 1) How we probably looked like bees on honey surrounding the guy with the gun and 2) Am I faster than at least one of the other guys?


Many people don't realize that Alaska is twice as big as Texas...so much for the myth that everything is bigger in Texas (Sorry Trip and Jerry Jones).

I also got to see about 6-7 whales doing their "bubble dance" about 100 feet from me and got pics of it too.

[i]Bubble Net Feeding (Bubble Dance)in Southeast Alaska

Occasionally, humpbacks in Southeast Alaska will feed in coordinated groups using bubbles to trap fish at the water’s surface. This behavio r is known as bubble net feeding. Bubble net feeding involves anywhere from 4-20 whales all working together to herd schooling fish into dense schools in order to maximize the feeding productivity of the group.

While many other whales and other animals use bubbles to assist in prey capture, the specific methods used in this complex feeding strategy are unique to whales in Southeast Alaska and are seen only in certain areas and seasons. To summarize the bubble net technique; a group of humpbacks will dive down to herring schools where one whale (the bubble-blower) will release a ring of bubbles from its blowhole as it spiral beneath the prey. As this air rises to the surface, it creates a curtain of bubbles that acts as a physical barrier to frighten and retain the school of herring. Simultaneously, another whale in the group will produce resonating vocalizations, which also act to frighten the prey and trigger them to school up in tight balls within the bubble net. The whales then orient below the schooled fish and lunge, mouths open, to the surface through the center of the bubble ring, or bubble net. This motion drives the fish to the surface, where they are trapped from all sides (the surface of the water above, the bubble curtain on the sides and the open mouths of whales below). The whales will break the surface of the water in unison with mouths wide open, and then close their mouths while roll at the surface as they force the water from their throat cavity out through their baleen plates; the sieving process which allows them to swallow their catch without having to swallow excess saltwater.[/i]
