kickstand spring

on my way to work and lost the kickstand spring, retraced my route and found it on the roadway. It was tough riding in holding the kickstand up with my foot so the kill switch wouldn't activate. Is this a common problem of the spring coming off...anyone experienced this?

10-4 on the bungee cords.
After I had my bike worked on at my former dealer, one of the mufflers dropped down in the rear and was dragging on the road, bungeed it up and got home to replace the bolt that had fallen out.
Oh, wait, you asked about kickstand springs, so no I have never had that happen.

the spring appears to be in fine shape, can't figure out what caused it to come off, the job will be holding the bike up and getting the spring back on by myself

You can lay the bike over on its engine guards and put the spring back on. It will not hurt the bike at all if you pad the guards somehow.

Don't bother trying to put the stock spring back on.

They fall off after the bolt and hole in the frame wear out of round enough for the stand to sag. There by taking enough tension off that the spring can fall off.

kickstand spring

I had this happen a couple months ago while I was out of town. I went to Home Depot and bought a two pack of heavy springs for around 5 or 6 bucks. Installed on and have had no problem since.

You have o remove the stand and put the spring ends in place then slide the stand into place.

Call me if you need any more advice. 561-210-3399

Oh I almost forgot, I lost about 2 cups of blood trying different ways of installing the spring.

I have to thank the VROC archives for helping me on this one.

Thanks! I found a piece of velcro strap here at work, that'll get me home and I'll check Home Depot in the morning

ok looking at the spring again, the curved end of the long section was stretched out some, I went out at break and pulled the bike along side a high curb in the parking lot, left it in gear so it wouldn't roll and leaned it over to where the bar rested on the curb. Put the spring back on and used a pair of vise grips to draw the spring ends in tighter, looks good now but will pick up some different springs just in case. Thanks all.

The kickstand area is a neglected area and it needs to be lubricated. Not a bad idea to lube it each time you change the oil. Might help with the wear issue.

MAS Tequila is correct. The bolt and the hole will wear out of round. Mine came off the other day. I took it off and made a bushing out of tin foil till I can get time to fix it. It's more of a problem with the hole in the frame than the bolt on mine (I'm on the second bolt). I plan on either drilling the hole and install a bushing or weld it up and re-drill it. Mine must have be moved up and down a million times by now so I guess something has to wear out.

Alabama-Good tip on lubing the stand. I just put a gob of grease on it and really made it easier to use.

Hacksaw are you in Louisville?

ya me too mine came off at a ride we were having. used a zip tie to hold it up till i got home. took the OEM spring and went to a hardware store and got a spring just a bit shorter and not as heave as the stock and as Gene said started lubing at each oil change.

I was fortunate, I guess, that the spring dropped off in the parking lot at work. A new bolt from the dealer and a thrust bearing tightened things up enough to fix the problem.

Lubing the sidestand is easy to overlook - one of those things that slowly gets harder to move so you might not realize it's dry and wearing out.

At every oil change is a good suggestion.
