I thought the same thing.

So its just the normal backlash of a bike with 61K? Went and talked to a mechanic today and he said if it was his bike he would leave it, they make noise, its normal as I have seen many others say over the years. I reckon I will put it back together & keep riding.

Mileage is not a factor in this case. That would have made the same noise from new. There has to be a certain amount of slack there. Every vehicle has the same thing. Jack your car up, and pull a wheel back and forth. You will hear, and feel the same thing, in the differential.

The noise I hear is new and only when accelerating at higher speeds, just noticed something different recently. Had the bike for like 6 or 7 years and occasionally cruise at around 90mph and it usually sounds so nice :) If I was wearing a helmet though I may not even hear it. Always appreciate your comments Mick, thanks!

Orignal looks good and I showed it to a
"retired" mechanic today and he said its good. Have a new one though, perhaps I should replace while I have the drive shaft out? The orig does seem just fine.

If you have the part and the driveshaft is apart I would replace the universal joint.

You are over half way, so it would be the smart thing to do. It would also eliminate it as a possible cause of the noise.

When I made the video I was twisting the gear back and forth but actually I would hear that same sound when rolling the bike or spinning the tire when on the lift.

I saw this old thread which sounded like the exact same issue so suspected the bevel gear bearing? http://vulcanbagger.com/forums/showt...l+gear+bearing

All the old pics are gone though. But before I put it back together, is there any way to rule out the bevel gear bearing? His symptoms did seem very similar and I do have the bearing in the freezer.

Call me @ 5612103399, it's one of the bevel gear bearings.

I've done a few of these in my time.

I ask a lot of bonehead questions & not very mechanically inclined but thanks to MAS I got the bevel gear bearing replaced. MAS is a good human, he gave a few tips on things I would have never figured out on my own. I appreciate everyone else's help as well over the years :)

Didn't see many flakes on the screen & when I removed the housing I ran a magnet around the inside and it did pick up some very fine bearing flakes. So I guess I will do a few oil changes with some cheap oil to hopefully flush them out?
