Smell coolant 1500

I took my bike out on Sunday since it was a balmy 46 degrees. I got home after 75 miles or so and I could smell the sweet smell of coolant. I looked around and did not see anything wet or leaking so I assume a very small leak. Is there a common area to look for on a 1500? Any ideas?

Hose clamps under the tank seem to be most common issue . V Scott

I agree with VS . There is a hose that goes to the top of each jug . These hoses have a tendency to loosen over time . You'll have to remove your tank to get at them . While your at it , might as well check all the other hoses and rubber caps as well .

Easy fix , you'll be back on the road in no time !!

Thank you. Anyone have a tutorial for changing the coolant and what type of coolant to use?

Check the tubes that the coolant hoses attach to at the heads.

I had one rust through.

It decided to fail, miserably on the interstate on afternoon.

You can imagine the mess it made.

Remove the small bolt that holds it in place and pull each from the head.

If either looks like it's getting thin, order a couple of new ones, don't get stuck out when one decides to let go.

Turn the fuel tap off,( horizontal position ) and disconnect the hose.A small amount will leak out of the hose.

I've pulled my tank off the bike when it's been full . Throw a rag over the throttle body before you disconnect the lines . You'll probably lose a couple ounces if that . Surprising how heavy a tank gets when it's got 5 gallons of fuel in it though .

As MAS said, if you gotta 2001-2004, replacing those pipes is cheap insurance. Tap along that pipe with a small plastic capped hammer, if it dents easily, replace pronto. If tapping (Tapping, not hitting!) an it feels solid, your good.
Remember flush your cooling system every few years....hoses every 4 to 5....flush before the hose change....
Sometimes the seal/gasket on the alum. cover on righthand side will weep slightly, also....
