Bike is not charging

I went for a short ride yesterday, and everything seemed fine until I was almost home. The bike stuttered, and misfired then smoothed out. It did the same once more until I was home, then after I parked it for a couple hours, it had a dead battery. After charging it started right up again, but I checked and seen that it is not charging.
Something has quit working, and I'll try to find the problem later on today.

use meter to check continuity on stater "alternator" ...each side to ground "0" to each other you should have path... check AC voltage ...manual is of great help...then its regulator or battery or wiring of charging circuit....

Usually, its either a battery going bad or a loose/dirty/corroded connection, but if its been a long road for the bike, either one of the stators or the regs can have bitten the dust.
The best tests are to check and see if theres a leg grounded on the 3 leads, then, see if she'll pass the voltage tests for each stator. If theres melted plugs....some attention is needed.
The Vulcan stators operate at a pretty high voltage, loose/dirty connections can melt things....
Remember, Resistance=Heat!

My guess is the connector inside the left side cover by the shifter has melted/ burnt and not making a good connection. Even if it ends up being the stators and you replace them, it is a good idea to eliminate the connection and just hard wire them.

I looked at at yesterday afternoon, and found a couple of the plugs from the stators had melted. I repaired the connections, and it shows that the bike is charging again.
Five wires needed to repaired.

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice in this thread even though its a few years later. I have an 04 Nomad. I installed an led voltmeter a couple of years ago and recently it was intermittently showing that it wasn't charging. I pulled off the left cover to get at the plugs for the stator/regulators. I found a couple of blades that had a little corrosion, but nothing bad. Cleaned them up, and then followed DragonLady's advice and checked the battery connections. Bad ground. Always check the easiest first. Thanks again.
