Question Overheating

Hello All, I am new to this forum, and recently purchased a used 2012 Vaquero.
Previous owner installed Tri oval exhaust, K&N replacement filter for stock air box, and has a power commander V Installed. I live in southern California, and in the summer we get 100+ days all summer, this bike runs in the red on a hot day. So far all I hear is to have my ECU Ivanized. But I can't believe that is the only fix. There must be a reason for this overheating? The bike is liquid cooled so I would not expect this kind of overheating issue? Any other reason or causes that are common to this bike? It does have 62K Miles on it, previous owner stated that Coolant was changed at dealer recently. He has only ran synthetic oil in the bike since new. Could it be what ever map is loaded on the commander? Not sure how to check or change the map. But I did look on the website and did not see very many map options for this bike.

Welcome from Northern California!

When you have the ECU re flashed by Ivan it will run much cooler. He programs the fan to come on at a lower temp and the fuel is set a little richer so it runs cooler.

Another known issue is the temp gauge is calibrated on the high side of the middle of the gauge. Do Ivans flash and ditch the Power Commander.

First question back to ya is, is the fan coming on and if so for how long? City or highway? Also if the coolant was changed they may have left an air bubble in it. And yes, some will adjust the fuel controller to the lean side causing heat, excessive heat. Ivan's is a great thing on this bikes.

Welcome to the forum from Alabama.

As the guys told you, ditch the power commander, and get ivanized....
Look over your bike good, especially up by the throttlebody....
Make sure you have no leaking vacuum lines, that will cause this though I'm pretty certain its the PC....it needs to be hurled....
Do a good, basic tuneup. Plugs, new fluids, filters, while your ecu is sent to Ivan.

It is never a good thing to repeatedly let that 1700 run up to the redline on the temp. I would go as far to say, send your ecu to Ivan, you flush the radiator, flush out your thermostat housing, would be a good idea to check your thermostat against a pot o water on the stove top with a mechanics thermometer....

Ivans flash is about the best money you'll ever spend on a Vaquero, bar none....PERIOD....

Get IVANized. If you want a detailed why and what changes, and why IVANizing is the answer. IVAN will tell you, he loves talking about his MANY ECU reprogrammings. If you prefer, I'll give it a go (detailing the why's of IVANs flash helping the heat) - with the help/assist of these forum brothers and sisters.
Get IVANized...

Ride safe,
Smokier
