Have any of you made your own trunk for your Nomad?
This is going to be my winter project. I'm going to make a trunk to match the shape of style of the nomad bags. I'm going to attempt to make it look as if I have taken two Nomad bags and put them together to make a trunk. I already have a Wompus Rack. I'm still trying to decide on whether to make access to the trunk as drop down side doors like the bags or do it as a single top load door. I'd also like to use the existing OEM backrest. I'll Keep a progress report going on this as I get it started in the next month or so.

Sounds VERY Interesting, For ease of access though, I would suggest hinging it on the left side or front side (opens toward the handlebars) I've had both, and both have their advantages. Keep us posted, I'd like to see it.

If I "see" what you are looking to do that would look great.

I see the image of trunk that looks like two bags side-by-side (only shorter in height). If that is what you are talking about... it would be similar to a custom pull-trailer I saw a guy have that he made. He also emulated the look of the saddlebags (same paint as the bike also) -- which looked really cool (I couldn't get a picture and asked him to post on this site; but he didn't).

Anyway... his trailer had the door open on the back-side toward the front, sort of like a car truck does. In other words, his hinges were along the top-side of the trailer (in your case on the top of the trunk right behind the passenger back-rest.).

By doing it that way; you would not interfere with the passenger back-rest. You could also "dress-up" the hinges so they look good from the top-end of the bike -- and you could put some-sort of cool trunk latch using a Vulcan emblem piece.

Anyway... I am sure I haven't explained this very well but if you could see what I "see", it looks really great and would be something I am sure other Nomad owners (pre-2009) would like for you to make.

So... be careful in how well you make your trunk as you'll likely be hounded to make some!! Ha! Be sure to post pics as you go.

Sorry about missing the progress till the next pic, but my memory card on my camera crapped out on me.

This is where I am currently. The sides will be built out like the doors of the bags.
More pics to follow as I make progress.

When you get it finished I want a couple pictures to add to my web page.
The shape is why I went with the early Yamaha trunk, it's the closest shape to the bags I've seen so far.... cept yours! ;)

Looking good! I really really like the idea! Just one question---will you be adding pads of some sort for a passenger to lean on? If so, and if the pad/backrest is vertical, what will you do with the space near the bottom of their back and the bottom front of the trunk? Will there just be a gap there?

Yes, it will just be a gap. I'll be using the OEM pad from the OEM backrest.
