BD,
Having trouble keeping the engine running when it's cold. I've adjusted the idle up to about 1100 , but then it's way to fast when it warms up. Now I'm using the throttle lock to keep the engine running until it warms up. The fuel enrichment knob doesn't do much. Any ideas?

Wrap the girl in a electric blanket to keep her warm through out the cool winter months.

Mine starts up easily enough in the cold here in Michigan, but I have to just hold the slightest bit of throttle for 20 seconds or so to keep it going initially if it is below about 30 degrees. After that it idles just fine. Had to do the same with my Concours and my son's 1500 Classic, although the Concours took slightly longer to hit the point where it would idle without stopping. In summer I don't have to do that. Sounds like yours is acting the same way. Are you having to run it a long time in oder to get it to idle?

It has to run for a couple of minutes before I can back off on the throttle lock. Yes, I cleaned the throttle body last month.

I should probably wait till master BD answers the question cause he probably has a good idea of what the problem is...but,

Cant remember oldbiker, have you done the resistor mod or using a fuel processor??? Sounds like you may be getting a little too much fuel for cold starts

Based on your other posts, I'm confident you have, but have you checked your air filter to see that it is clean? That can also cause rough cold running that tends to smooth out as the motor really warms up.

I haven't done the resistor mod and I'm not using a fuel processor. The air filter was changed in September, but I went out and checked it to make sure it's clean.

You still have the fast idle solenoids hooked up under the right side cover right? Also no "air mods"?? That knob under the right side cover is just a fast idle cable and yep, it's doesn't work real well. Gadget has a remedy that makes that pull out knob apply more gas and give a 1200 startup. Your part of the woods shouldn't be getting too too cold.

Gas doesn't stay in the tank very long . I usually have to fill the tank every week. I fired it up this afternoon and noticed black smoke when I rev'd it up, before it was warm. Running pretty rich until it gets warm then it's fine. Just wont stay running when it's cold. I saw the deal on Gadget where you cut off part of some tubing and put it over the fast idle cam. I guess I'll give it a try. The coldest morning we've had so far was 12 degrees. Like to say THANKS to everyone for the help. Loose Old Lesbians to ALL.

I just pullout my CHOKE knob and let it idle fast for 20 sec then push it in and its off the the races. I dont have a fuel processor so dont know about that oldbiker.

It takes 3-4 minutes before my bike will idle on its own in the cold weather, As mentioned earlier, turning up the idle causes it to run to fast once it is warmed up.

Sounds like a dose of Sea Foam wouldn't hurt. Liz's 04 Nomad does the same thing every now and then. I give it 5oz. of Sea Foam to a full tank of gas and it helps a lot.

The Seafoam makes a difference in my bike also, I use it approx every 7-10 tankfills, but I noticed when I am back on just gasoline without the Seafoam it doesn't run as well as it does with it. Ive put up to 3/4 of a can in a tank and it seems to be a great product.
