Thoughts on Dunlop Rear Tire

I found a local guy within a couple of miles from me and he does tire changes at his shop at his house. I talked to him yesterday and found out he also carries Metzler and Dunlop tires. I need a rear tire and you can purchase the Metzler or Dunlop 404 for $150 or the Dunlop Elite 3 for $170. The installation is $40.

Now the question is, how does the Dunlop 404 stack up against the Elite 3? I am leaning toward the Elite 3. Would like your thoughts on both tires and also the prices he quoted me. I will check back tonight after I get in from work. Thanks.

Ive never run an Elite 3 but the D404 seems to do a good job for the price. My rear tire is a Dunlop Cruisemax which looks almost the same as a D404.

Don't forget to check the date of the tire you by. One bad thing you can not do when buying on-line.

Time to go with a C/T Gene. Why not join the Darkside. You'll be glad you did. IMO.

Thats probably the best idea for a rear tire.

Thoughts on Dunlop Rear Tire

Bama; you asked for opinions!

Let me preface my iopionion with: I had no problems with the OEM stone on my 07. Got 12,000 on the first rear and 15,000 out of the 2nd rear. At 12,000 1st one wasn't to wear bars but was leaving on 5,000 mile trip and didn't want to do change on road. Got 22,000 out of first front and have 11,000 on 2nd front and about 1/2 worn. So I must not be hard on tires even though I am a big guy and ride quickly. I am a heavy user of the front brake, maybe that helps my rear tires?

After two rear stones I switched the rear to a Dunlop E3 160/80/16 because: And here is where the opinions start: I wanted to go to a slightly larger circumference tire. But I wanted to stay with Bias front and rear and with the width of our rear wheel I did not want a wider tire. I have about 7,000 on the E3. Seems like it will go 15-20,000 for me. Handles decent and is quiet. And I like the extra clearance it gives plus it fixed about 1/2 my speedo error.

You should be able to get this tire for abotu $130 but if he will change the rear on the bike for $40 that is a bargain.

i prefer the dunlop E-3 bias 160/80-16.they wear great and even
though they are bias ply, they are made with a radial tire profile
so i find the handling to be much improved over the stosk stones.

The 'Darkside' is calling you. It's power is strong. And we have cookies.

Seriously though; I ran several D404's and never got more than 8500 milea out of one.

Try the CT you WILL NOT regret it.

Gene, I probably would have looked a little more closely at the E3, except I needed to watch the wallet. So, I got the D404, which is also a well-rated tire. Next rear tire change, I am looking seriously at a CT.
