Car tire on motorcycles - an opinion

I know for sure that the Dunlops that are installed by HD at the factory are a dual compound tire and I am quite certain that most of the other tire companies have followed suit.

Car tire on motorcycles - an opinion

Followed mtn1600 (occasional participant here) and Dan L on a gravel road recently. mtn1600 has a CT and man did it kick up about 10x as much dust as Dan. CT must be a lot better for stopping, although the weight still goes to the front. I've locked the rear a few more times than I would have liked.

I bet that the car tires will spit out a few rocks pretty good once in a while also.

Car tire on motorcycles - an opinion

Anyone around here got an opinion on synthetic vs. regular oil?? ;)

Seriously, I can see the appeal of a car tire on the rear of the bike. Longer tread life, lower replacement cost, and so on. I can understand people's apprehension about it, but everyone that's got one seems to like it.

My question is: Why has no one (maybe they have) talked about car tires on the front of the bike? Does it not look as 'cool' as a motorycle tire? Normally your front tire wears longer than the rear, so is it acceptable to pay motorcycle tire prices for the front, but not for the rear? Or is it a front fender clearance issue? What if a car tire would not interfere with the front fender? Would you put a car tire on the front too?

Not trying to be antagonistic here, but just wondering about the front tire.

Billz, Probably hard to find one narrow enough, and would look just a little strange I'd think.

I don't think as Ells said that you will fine a car tire in 145 or 155 at 16 inches. The rear tire I installed was the narrowest (185) I could find in 16 iinch.

Yes that's a good point- that would probably be a difficult size to find.

I think it would look wierd if you could find a narrow enough tire. Perhaps switching to a smaller diameter rim would allow you to do that if you really wanted to.

Not nearly as bad as mc tires do... I have no choice but to ride is sand and gravel 1/2 mile to get to the town road. When I was on thje brick rear I always heard the ping of a rock whizzing in some direction, and more than once each time coming in and going out..

I figured it was both tires doing that since i could feel the bike step over sideways, but I was mostly wrong, and it mostly was the rear tire zingging rocks.

The in general effect is must lesser now with the ct on... I own that road now.

Car tire on motorcycles - an opinion

I am not saying to do it. But I am buying a dunlop sp5000 196/60/r16 for my bike. I am tired of having to go put tires on every 6000 miles or 7000 miles. I have yet to hear anybody who has done it say anything bad about it. I believe there are to many LAWYERS out there to get a true response from anyone that has the expertise to really say if it is good or bad, Afraid of bing sued. jmo

It looks like I might have to give it a try after this rear tire wears out.
