TFI Settings for 1500/1600 Nomad

Did a full tank with mostly city driving and got 33.75 MPG's. No fan ever!

Found a station today that had the lowest octane rating out there 86 R+M/2 method on a 90 degree day and got it to ping! LOL

Pulled the plugs and they looked still a little lean? I thought for sure with my settings I'd see some darkening of the plug but they look spotless. Obviously not rich running for sure!

Gave the Nomad a full fuel injector scrubbing and piston de-carboning (Seafoam) to remove any extra buildup from running premium. With the Seafoam poured directly in the spark plug hole and allowed to soak overnight, the bike smoked like a bomb all the way to the freeway today!

As a side note to that, you can sure tell if your exhaust connections are leaking because you'll see tons of smoke either/or at the flange at the heads or the goat belly (Stock exhaust). Mine leaked at every clamp so I tightened all of them.

TFI Settings for 1500/1600 Nomad

The wife and I went for a nice ride yesterday with DK to the Cherohala Skyway. My pots were still set the same as in my last post,
Pot 1 =2:45
Pot 2 =3:30
Pot 3 =1:00
Pot 4 = 8:00
The first 90+ miles was highway/interstate. The next 60 was 2 lane highway up to Robbinsville NC, and we filled up there. I ran the numbers and got 35mpg. I turned pot 1 down to about 2:15, and the bike ran just as good as it previously had. We made our way over the Skyway, out to Bald River Falls, and to Tellico Plains TN. We had a great ride and there we parted company. The wife and I rode on down to Fairmont GA. and stopped for a break. I also filled up, and also had 150 miles on the clock (same as before I adjusted the TPS) and put 1 less gallon of gas in the tank to fill it slightly more than the previous fill-up. I ran the numbers again and come-up with 43 mpg. Bike still runs very strong, and I still run premium, and I'm going to leave it like it is. (for a while anyway)

Most recent settings:
Pot 1 =2:15
Pot 2 =3:30
Pot 3 =1:00
Pot 4 = 8:00

TFI Settings for 1500/1600 Nomad

Wow, I must be doing something wrong. My pot settings are pretty close to the factory suggested settings, i.e.

1 - 2.30
2 - 3.00
3 - 1.00
4 - 9.00

(I should add I have a K&N air filter and V&H Baggers)

Booklet says that the 1st (green) pot is generally responsible for 90% of the fuel mileage, yet with the above I can't get any better than 36 mpg ??? Where am I going wrong?

Moenko; you might dail your pot #1 down in :15 increments to see if you get better. You should since that pot is responsible for most of your mpg, I dont think pot #2 would help much. And just dont throttle it so heavy will help. :-)

Hehe, thanks Doc - I will try that. If you remember perhaps, I added the TFI because I had off-idle hesitation to a point where the engine would stall on occasion and the TFI has done away with that - hopefully it won't return when I dial pot 1 down ... ::)

Hi Doc, did you get the "gasp" between 1st and 2nd gear shift and has the TFI cured that ?

TFI Settings for 1500/1600 Nomad

Update: Ran the first tank of gas through with the above settings on the new TFI. I always got about 30 mpg all city stop'go driving w/o TFI/ With TFI it dropped to about 28 mpg. I already turned pot #1 to 2;00 now and will see what the next tank will do. Will leave pot #2 where it is since that only dumps a little gas when you throttle it hard. Im a happy camper.

TFI Settings for 1500/1600 Nomad

I've been trying to keep up on this thread and any other that relates to the TFI. {i.e. TFI Installed}I am about to do the full "Caddmann" and then incl. the TFI. Please excuse any ignorance that might show on my behalf but I have a few questions for all of/some of you.

1. Will I or should I expect to HAVE to install the TFI after doing the Caddmann ??

2. Looking at the difference in pot settings,.. and they seem to vary considerably at times between some of you,.....How much does elevation play into these settings?

I always thought that because it's fuel injection we're dealing with, that wouldn't be a factor. If that's true, why such a difference in the settings from one Nomad to another? I'm guessing that fuel octane would play a part. But if that's the same in two bikes .......

Theoretically, aren't they/shouldn't they all be set up the same? I would have expected it to be like changing a bulb in a turn signal. The same bulb in my signal bucket would fit yours.

I'd like to understand it all before I take the job on.

RC, If you do open up the intake, you will need a fuel processor. As far as the differences in settings, I'm thinking that the factory variances/tolerances in their settings may play a part in the reason for the differences. And if your trying to put enough fuel in so it won't ping on regular fuel, or if your shooting for mileage over power, or vice versa. All of these will make your settings different than another persons. With the last settings I have previously posted, I have awesome power (for a Nomad) and pretty good mileage (42-43 mpg) cruising 2-up on the 2 lane highways. On the interstates ,75-80 mph, I only get about 40 mpg.
