TFI Settings for 1500/1600 Nomad

Thought it might be helpful for everybody that owns or just installing a TFI to list your pot settings. This will give everybody an idea if they are close. You can update your pot settings as you tweak them and like them. Sound helpfull guys?? ???

Pot #1: 2:30
pot #2 5:30
pot #3 OFF
pot #4 9:00

so far good settings for me, too early to tell about mpg., more later.

Good Luck, Doc

Doc, really be interested in your mileage.

Most guys I know that have TFI are running 2 to 2:30 on first pot and no higher than 3 to 3:30 on second.

TFI Settings for 1500/1600 Nomad

will check it soon enough. I set pot #2 down to 3:00 today and ran it pretty hard and she dont have the get up and go she does at 5:30. So back to 5:30. Pot #1 is the main pot for mpg so if it falls I will turn it back slowly. I hoping I can leave pot #2 where she is and just drive normal and not lose too many mpg.

TFI Settings for 1500/1600 Nomad

My TFI settings for 3 years (and averaging 43-44 mpg) has been
Pot 1 =2:00
Pot 2 =2:30
Pot 3 =1:00
Pot 4 =8:00

A couple of weeks ago, we had a gas shortage and IF you could find gas it was regular. The bike pinged like crazy, so I tried adjusting per the instructions that came with it and got.....

Pot 1=3:30
Pot 2 =5:30
Pot 3 =1:00
Pot 4 =8:00
My mileage went down to 38-39 mpg and STILL pinged like crazy, so I tried mid-grade, and the only time it pinged was going up hills. Soooooo I went back to premium and no pinging but the mileage was still 38-39 mpg, but the bike ran like a scalded dog. So to get a little of the mileage back, I turned it to

Pot 1 =2:45
Pot 2 =3:30
Pot 3 =1:00
Pot 4 = 8:00
It still runs strong and mileage is around 41 mpg. I think I'll leave it like that for a while and stick to the premium, after all, there's only about 80 cents difference on a fill-up between regular and premium.

VulcanE: thanks for your input. the directions that came with mine stated:
pot#1 2:30
pot#2 3;00
pot#3 OFF
pot#4 9:00

have you tried 9:00 for pot #4? why 8:00??

Just curious. I put pot #2 at 2:30 and she didnt run as strong as 5:30. Im sure I will tweak these somewhat as time goes by.

Doc, Pot #4 is to set what RPM the unit forgets everything and just dumps the full flow of fuel (say that fast 3 times ). You are supposed to set it @ 70% of red line RPM for the engine. Here's a "copy" of the instructions for the 4th pot from Dobeck's web-site

The red pot adds its fuel above 70%of maximum RPM.
RPM pot(4th): All V-twins. Sets the RPM that the red pot fuel (main jet fuel)
turns on. One clock position is roughly 1000 RPM. This pot should be set to about
70%of redline. (For example: Suzuki M109R redlines at 5800 RPM and 4000 is
roughly 70%of redline which would be 4:00 o’clock). On “some” dual plug systems
(Kawasaki, Suzuki) you will need to double the RPM clock position to have the same
results.Verify setting by raising the RPM in neutral, look for green and yellow LED
to shut off and the red LED to turn on at the chosen RPM or refer to suggested
settings if you have no tachometer.

So, if you want this operation to take place @ 4000 RPMs, and 1 clock position =1000 RPM, and having to double it due to having dual plugs, shouldn't it be @ the 8:00 position?

makes sense to me

Only problem is, is that the 3rd pot is off so it doesn't matter. The TFI with the 3rd pot off lets the factory ECM tell the injectors to dump the usual amount of fuel at wide open.

essentially yes. Unless you highly modify your Nomad and need to dump more fuel at wide open!!! Nomads run rich enough wide open from the factory.

I understand now, so they shouldnt be that hard to adjust. How do you adjust pot#1, I did what the instructions said and I got up to 3;00 and there was no change in my idle, just like billmac. I tried again with the first pot light on and did the turn it up while bike is idling at 2,000 rpm and still no change, I didnt go pass 3;00? I just left it at 2:30

I have mine set at
3:00
6:00
off
9:00
I run 87 octane and have no pinging and it just loves to eat up Harley's and as BD said hang on when you hit 2nd gear for it will break the rear tire loose

I have mine set the same as oldbiker;

3:00
6:00
off
9:00

I can cause a momentary slight ping on mid-grade gas, if I lug it and crank the throttle.

I don't think mine will break the tire loose with my XXX-large on it.

I was getting 40mpg before the TFI, I hope my mileage will stay up.

Still have mine at

2;30
5;30
off
9;00

not changing unless mileage suffers. so far first bar went out at about same in town mileage. NO pinging at all in any gear on 87.

Good thread, I'll bookmark this for when I buy my TFI. Curious on everyone's gas mileage though, I seen a lot of questions concerning this, but no one has come back and provided the results.
