Engine bogging down

Houston, we have a problem.

I was out on a 4-5hr ride today. Temp was about 15c and the bike ran fine for the most part. On the way home for the last 10KMS, the bike started to bog down. I would run but it seems that 1 cylinder was not firing. Slowed down then it was ok for a bit and then it would do it again. This happened maybe 4 times and after that it was ok. The speed was about 90km/hr when it was doing it.

I am thinking spark plug but they were replaced about 3000kms ago (last year in Aug).

Any suggestions?

If you don't think its the plugs it could have been a tank of bad gas. Add some fuel deicer to it and see if that helps. It sounds like you may have some water in the tank.

Make sure the plug leads are fully pushed on the plugs. My bike did the same thing once and it was one plug lead not fully seated. Did you fill the tank before storing for the winter. Could be bad fuel ?

I would check the plugs and the boots as mentioned. Plugs are very inexpensive in my opinion. You can buy them here at Advance Auto. Could be the gas but more than likely something to do with the firing.

I just remembered that a couple years ago I had a cylinder cutting out on my bike. It ended up being a bad connection on one of the ignition coils under the tank.

You know, I was thinking the same thing because it only happens once in a while. I guess I have to take the tank off the check it out.

Did you fill up anywhere during the ride?, if so was it doing it before the fill up. I picked up bad gas last year and the bike would bog for a few seconds and then run fine. Once or twice it stalled at speed, but seemed to idle fine. As well as checking leads and plugs, You might try dumping some seafoam in the gas.

Nope, no fill up during the ride. Actually, it was at the end of the day that it started to happen. I have used about 200KM of gas, about 1/2 to 2/3 of the tank left on the gauge. I will try seafoam and alcohol in the tank.

Mine used to do it coming home from work only, while going up a long hill. I figure the vibration of the motor while under torque was just right to start grounding out the LH coil. If I gunned the bike for a few seconds the missing would go away.

Is that a speaker mounted on your engine gaurd? If so... how do you like them and what kind are they? thx

Yes it is. I do and don't like them. The are blaupluket speakers in a 6in light housing for trucks. That is what the original owner said. I would prefer on the handlebars the this will do for now.

There is your problem.
The speakers are to close to the engine and it forgets to do its job as it is to involved with listening to the tunes. ;)

I have pulled the tank off. Where do I look for this problem? ??? Lots of wire and you can't see much.

I can see the 2 wires coming off each coil but don't know where they go.

The coils are at the front just below the rad cap area, look closely where the wires connect to the coil terminals. Make sure they are clipped on tightly and not touching anything else.
On my bike Ive added a tach and cruise control, and each one has a wire added to the coil. Its congested in there now and an awkward spot to work in.
