Bought my fourth Vulcan this fall, a Voyager. First Vulcan that I hated! Too darned top heavy which made slow speed maneuvering a bunch of hard work. Just the opposite of what riding a bike is supposed to be as far as I am concerned
So I swapped it for a 1700 Nomad. Putting a light bar, LED lights, Freedom Performance pipes, Chuckster's BAK, Ivanize and a Hitchdoc on it. Towing a Vision trailer on long trips. Going to Arizona Bike Week, VROC Hil County rally. Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, the Arches and Las Vegas next Spring and Summer. Kirk Maze Meltdown VROC 7860 Elephant Butte, NM |

Agreed, Voyager is top heavy! But I don't hang out in parking lots much. Add an amp, larger speakers, cup and holder with a full tank of gas, and a trunk full of clothes while traveling, it can be a beast on unlevel ground,,,, with gravel under the shoe. But, I still love it on them long runs. Russell daylong seat and it's on for all day riding.
Make it yours with the little add-ons. Adds up over time in the wallet but makes it more better fun.

I'm Baaaaaaack!
Well, been out riding with all the good weather up until a couple of months ago.... I got snookered into helping a friend repower his 02' Nomad into a all electric scooter. Man, what a mess of wires! I did all the frame welding and fab. work, he should have it going in about 2 months or so.... Myself, been building my trike....almost have all my frame tacked up, was gonna do a 350 build, folks wanted a arm and a leg for them, finally decided to go with a 283, most all the smallblock parts fit, its not like I need a lotta horses powering this thing. I acquired a set of old of Crager SS mags for the rear (S10) along with a set of Tbucket Mickey Thompson Sprint car tires. Transmission will be a shorty powerglide.... Am gonna mount my Nomad bags to the inside of the rear wheels to where the doors open to the inside. Using a 01' neck and extended front forks, wheel/tie/brakes.... Slow progress, but its coming together.... Will be using all Nomad parts like the floorboards, tank, side panels, I've picked up about 6 rear fenders so I can cut them up and add pieces to the middle to widen them. Tank will house the aircleaner, Holley EFI, etc....

I rode in a Mickey Thompson AMC car, wayback when,..... Damn that thing was fast. For its time.

Yea mbarr, I was looking for the 304 AMC or the 340 something....don't remember the exact engine size....
Anyway, was wanting something that would drive a big heavy trike peppily down the road, and if I'm on the road, pick up parts at any auto store on sundays. the little V8 has a lumpy rv cam, smallish 2bbl holley with alum.intake, HEI distr., block hugger headers. Picked up the engine from a olde gent. who was gonna stick it in a TBucket. Got it for $550, Cragar SS's for $100....chrome has started flaking....he had the tires but they were like 25 years old, no dry rot, but got the newer ones. I have the Holley EFI with throttlebody, and the roller rockers, gear drive.... The trans is a powerglide w/B&M transkit in it, with a 12" B&M torque converter. I was gonna use the old 3 speed man. that was on the 283, but I couldn't see myself trying to hold the beast on the side of a hill here in Wa with the clutch.... Anyway....once I get everything all test fitted together and blow it apart for paint I'll post some pics. I'm installing a wood burning stove in my shop right now....tired of using little dinky electric heaters. Anyway, I've been kinda thinking about the gears in the rearend, thinking about 3.23's....

Seemed to be more stable in turns and tracked better. I noticed sharp bumps weren't as soft but it could be because of 15W oil in forks and 50 degree weather. Not uncomfortable though and definitely love the ride. It's nice to have the breaking in the front back as the leaking fork oil got on to the pads in one of the calipers. Bearings weren't too bad but showed signs of wear. About 60,000 on bike. |

My plans this year are to install the progressive 444s I bought on ebay . add a throttle grip roller bearing kit a brake light module and modify my voyager trunk and nomad back rest to allow quick swaps back and forth figure i will do the same to the reckless fairing and the nomad stock windshield .
