Hi All,

Some good ideas here. Getting on or off the motorcycle involves some choices and there are advantages and disadvantages to each of them. So thinking is definately required. The general principle for me is to put the motorcycle between me and the traffic. I can keep an eye on what's happening behind me as I get on/off and I've got a way out if something untoward is happening. Depending on where I'm stopped that means I can get on/off on the left or the right.

Other considerations might be; where am I parked (in my garage, up against a wall or vehicle, in a parking lot), which way are the handlebars turned, how is your bad knee doing etc..

So, no one answer is correct when it comes to getting on/off your ride

best regards,

Shemogolee

Left unless on the side of the road, then I use the right side.

When I mount, the bike is on the centerstand and it's from the kickstand side. I have seen motorcops do it from the off side, so there must be a safety reason, but I find it awkward and once I actually lost my balance getting off the bike on the off side once and made the mistake of grabbing the throttle grip and when I did that, the bike followed me and the sad thing was it wasn't my bike.

I always mount from the left. Sometimes I may get off the right side, but not often. The GF got on from the right last weekend and I dang near dropped the bike with both feet on the ground.....totally awkward to me and she now knows left side only!!
When I get on, I've developed the habit of lifting my rt foot and stepping straight across the seat, the I spin and sit down.....got tired of hanging my leg on the backrest or drop kicking the bags.

Side of the road doesn't bother me. I'll still dismount on the left side and maybe, if the mood strikes, walk right...out...into...traffic. Haven't been hit yet. If I do, they'd better have good insurance cuz I have a good liar.......er, lawyer.

Either, or for me - but I'm also 6' tall so I can have no problem accessing the bike from the rear brake side. But - I usually keep all my "pertinent" gear in the l/h saddlebag, so usually the kickstand side.
