I believe the Velcro strap is to prevent the glove from popping off your hand during an unscheduled dismount. Personally, so long as the Velcro is on a wide band so I can get ahold of it easy, I'm okay with that. I went all fancy with the Held Rodney gloves. I figure as much time as I spend on my bike, I might as well have good comfortable gear! And they have several 'motorcycle specific' features as well.
