New to me bike purchase comments requested
Greetings!
I believe I have identified a bike that suits my needs....for now. It will be my first Vulcan and the first bike I've owned in more than 20 years. It is a 2001 fuel-injected, 1500, with about 40K miles. It appears to be in good shape and the cosmetics look good. My question for the forum, is this. "What are the things I should be asking or looking for specifically before I hand over the cash". I know this is a broad subject, but I know the experience available on this forum will allow me to make a more informed decision. One specific question I have is, "does the 2001 1500 electrical have enough power to support a phone charging mount and a hard wired intercom system? Thanks in advance! Welcome from southern NC. The 1500 is a great bike and very reliable. Just look for the most likely things. Tires, oil leaks, brakes, fluids, etc. Good luck with the search.

I bought the very same bike last year with 87k on it. I have a power port for my phone,a radio, extra lights and no problems. Mine was pristine and had been well taken care of. You might search for the gadget fixit website to see all of the things someone may have done and it will give you enough knowledge to ask some good questions. This was my first bike in 36 years my last being a full dress goldwing. This is by far one of the best i have ridden. I'm javingvto change the u joint out since it eas one of the few things that was never replaced.

Purchased a 2001 Nomad 1500FI last October as my first bike ever! Little bigger than I intended for my first bike, but as the saying goes "too good to pass up"!
Mine has just over 45,000 miles on it. I'm loving it! |

Most common problem is cam chain wear, ask if extenders have been done.
U joint is fairly common. Both cheap easy fixes if done in your garage. At least lube the drive. Otherwise these are solid well built bikes. Luv my '02.

Check to see if cam plug seals are leaking. They can be cleaned and patched with some high temp sealant, but once they start leaking they're not gonna stop. This is not a show stopper, but something you need to be aware of and know what to look for. Info on Gadgets page covers it plus there's probably lots of discussion on forums about this. My 2000 fi Nomad started leaking on both sides at about 50k miles. By the time I sold it with 65k, it was leaking enough that it was noticeable and the sealant trick wasn't doing much good anymore. Overall maintenance is pretty easy on these bikes and I still believe they are a good bike compared to other options out there if you're looking to buy used. I also did the clutch spring upgrade myself, not a hard job if you take your time and follow instructions carefully. It would be good to know if it's already been done on the bike you're looking at.
