Swing Arm Etc..

Well I saw today that my rubber boot on the Nomad has a nice long split. I ordered a new one so I thought I would take this time to drop the swing arm and do all that fancy mechanic stuff.


On the spline lube subject I see that Honda Moll 60 is no longer and the new guy is the M77. Are they comparable? I read different opinions on both sides.


What do you guys use? I see Loctite has a nice molly out as well that is suppose to be 65%. Also I came upon guard dog or something as another alternative.
Thoughts?


What chassis lube seems to work the best for the Nomads? Is it wise to go ahead and slap in some brngs and seals? All balls have them for 18.00.


I have read numerous posts on here as well as the gadget articles. I kinda get a feel for what I am up for here. Not hard just time consuming to say the least.


Any tips or tricks are appreciated.

I still have a few tubes of the Honda Moll 60, so I'm still using that. The only advice I can offer is to take the saddle bag mounting brackets off as an assembled unit.

I did it this past winter. Not too difficult if you follow the instructions from a service manual or from the Gadget fixit page website.

There is a coiled spring between the rear end of the driveshaft and the final drive that will fall out when you pull the final drive. Don't forget to put it back in. On the other end of the drive shaft is small spring loaded pin that locks the driveshaft onto the output shaft. Be mindful and don't let it go flying away.

Use whatever lube you want it's just splines that slide a little.

I use Moly lube, but any decent grease will work there. and check the u joint while you have it apart.

While your swingarm is off, check all your bushings and bearings, check to make your swingarm is tight to the frame, if not, shim to spec. Wouldn't hurt to install a zerk fitting to grease those lonely bearings/bushings in the swingarm....

Thanks All. Got parts on order. Im gong to put on some new pads, and bearings while I have it apart.


Do they sell the shims for the swing arm or is that something I need to fabricate from shim stock?

Yes you have to fabricate them. Get something that won't damage the paint, and pry the swing arm all the way to the opposite side your on. Using feeler gauges, measure the distance between the swing arm and frame where the swing arm pivots. What ever number you get make 2 shims half that amount (eg....... measure .106" with feeler gauge, make 2- .053" thick shims) and place one on each side. This will keep the swing arm centered on the frame.

I used snowmobile clutch shims that I had, they were almost the correct size, I only had to open the hole up a little to get them to fit properly.

I read on here somewhere that guys have used the reducers that an electrician uses in a panel box. 1" down to 3/4. They are large flat washer looking things. Don't know how they would hold up.


Boot is in, waiting on my bearing kits and my Loctite Moly..
