Back Pain

I don't know what has changed from last year. So far this season every time I ride I have serious upper back pain after 20-30 min. Last year I could ride 1-2 hours before feeling any discomfort and after a 10 minute stop all was good for another hour so.

So far I have tried Corbin young gun with stock bars and risers. Same setup as last year.

Stock seat, bars and risers

Stock seat with back rest, stock bars and risers.

Corbin with Scootworks 2" up and back risers

Stock seat, stock seat with back rest and the risers.

Nothing has helped, risers actually made it worse.

At this point I am looking for any ideas that may help.......

Can you loosen the handle bars and tilt them back a little toward you? I had a Yamaha that most folks had to replace the handle bars with ones that had more pull back. This helped my upper back pain. But it may be as much an issue with your back as it is with the bike.

Go to the Chiropractor, get some adjustments for your back and neck. Then start doing some upper body exercises.

Riding these scoots not for the faint of heart. You need to keep yourself in good physical shape.

If you have had some injuries there may be a limit you can do.

BUT don't give up. There is a root cause, find out what it is and deal with it.

Not much help I know but for the first half dozen trips or so of each year my back hurts quite bad. Then, on the next rip, nothing, dunno why but I've always been like that. I'm wondering if I'm nervous and tense 'till I get back in the saddle for awhile......Mike

Just got the news last month my lower back is getting old. Arthritis, degenerative disks and one leaking disk. Riding is actually better than driving. My mind is too occupied to worry about it hurting. Some stretching exercises and a steroid shot in the back did what no other pills were doing.

I think the worst part about it all is, I know the rest of the body is going to catch up to this aging thing soon enough.

Getting old is not for the faint of heart. Not getting old is worse.

DITTO

But to the OP, I found that having my hands at or just slightly above elbow level made all the difference for me, and to adjust the bars back to you, not you toward the bars. I also installed 1700 bars on mine back in '09 when they came out, they moved my hands back about 3 inches.

I see a chiropractor once every two weeks because I have three degenerative discs in my lower back . My wife is a registered yoga teacher . I kept complaining about sore shoulders , numb hands , pretty much the whole nine yards . I was ready to quit riding . Part of the course she took was muscle's and tendons . We both went out for a ride and she then notice my posture while riding . The stock bars ( for me ) where to low and to far away which caused me to lean forward resting all my weight on them ( my shoulders were taking a pounding ) . That caused all my issues .
Last year I went with taller bagger bars that keep your hands in line with your forearms . I went with 14" bars which puts my hands just below my shoulders . You don't have to go that high but it worked for me and I can ride all day long without any pain .

Like snake ranch said , see a chiropractor . There may be an issue he can fix . I have different stretches I do on a daily basis . It really helps .

Maybe all you need is a set of risers to bring the bars up and closer to you .

Good luck , hope you find a solution to a pain free ride . .

Wish I could go back to the days when I could jump on any bike and ride for days with no problem. Age is a great thing, the mind still wants to act like I am 20. The body not so much.

So far I have been looking into exercises to help, will see how things go. After more than 30 years of riding something is off, maybe I will take the chiropractor suggestion and give it some thought.

Thanks all

Stretches in the morning and evening are helping.

Thought about lifting more weights, but my wife said going from 12 ounce beers to 32 ounce beers is not what they have in mind.

She's right as usual. They would probably tell me it's better to gradually work up to 32 ounces.

Aftermarket bars, NOT risers. Not only do you want the top of the bars at or just below SHOULDER level but you need the grips turned outwards more than stock (about 22* is supposed to be perfect for most). You also want a slight bend at the elbow. Tilting bars back a little bit isn't bad but don't pull them back so much that you end up with the tiller effect.

I have the bars tilted back now. A little better. I have just found a set of barons mitered bars that claim to be narrower, more pull back but the same rise as stock.

Thought about apes but I hate the look of a bagger with them. Just a personal thing.

So, you're more concerned with looks than comfort? If that's the case, buy whatever bars make you look cool.
