"Damper"

In doing the dreaded clutch rod seal leak, I noticed the piece screwed into the inside of the left engine cover. With no obvious clues as to what it is, I looked it up on a parts diagram. There are two parts labeled Damper, Numbers 92161 and 13271. What do they dampen? They're not connected to anything except the chrome side cover. Are they supposed to dampen engine noise? If so, they are a waste of time. These engines make more noises that a $20 hooker.

Look under Left Side Cover of Kawi parts diagram. Same diagram you find the clutch rod seal.

Yes, they are noise dampers....
I have a Thunder Clutch Pressure Plate setup, instead of a diaphram spring, I have 6 single springs. I had to remove the damper under my right cover to put the cover on....my clutch hit the damper inside the cover after install.
My clutch and gearbox ARE noisier with that damper missing....
Soooo-yes, they do make a difference....

Maybe it won't be too bad to fix. Clutch rod seal fell out on my 06 Nomad 1600, literally took me about 10 minutes to fix it. Once I got the covers off to where I could see it, I just cleaned around everything, pushed the seal back into place, and never had a problem out of it again. Wasn't worth tearing down to replace in my opinion. The seal was still firm and fit snug. Maybe yours will be the same.

I replaced the seal, which, once you get to it, takes about 10 minutes to clean up the area and insert the new one. It takes maybe 15 minutes to get the floorboard out of the way, remove the shift levers, remove the chrome cover and slave. Then you simply slide the rod out, check for burrs, insert new seal, insert the flat end of the rod into the seal with a drop of oil on the concave end and put everything back together. It's not hard at all. Even I did it. I did coat the diameter of the seal with RTV gasket goop before inserting it (sounds pornographic) to help prevent future leaking. So far so good. I had one 15 mile 75mph errand run and a couple slower errand runs and no drips.
