Chrome plating

Has anyone had parts Chromed? How expensive is it? I would like to chrome a few pieces, but the local chromer doesn't seem too interested. I actually had one tell me so. i guess they are only wanting to do large bumpers?

Any way, what have you had chromed? What did it cost you? Do you know of a place that I could send a few parts?

Jared, I had the trunk rack I built chromed at a local shop. I paid $135. I say local, it is about 70 miles from my home. Here is the link to this Mom & Pop shop that does great work. Triple plated.

Chrome plating

Five years ago I had a rear crashbar and my lightbar rechromed, it cost me $245.00 back then. And he had the best price I could find. Here in Canada there are very few chrome plating shops left because of the stringent rules for controling the chemicals. Many shops have been fined out of business for enviromental reasons, and the one left charge a fortune.
The crashbar I had done was $98.00 new and the shop charged me $85.00 to replate my old one.

ChromeMasters is the ONLY place you want to do any plating for you. I used them for all the plating on my HD and they are excellent people to deal with and their work is exceptional.

Check with Chuckster1 as he gets his parts chromed at a local shop. Maybe you could send it to him and get it done along with some of his parts.

Jared, There has to be somebody locally in Utah that does triple plate chroming. Sure would beat shipping your stuff back and forth. This guy down here does excellent work as evidenced on his website. It's really convenient to have the best right here in my backyard. Check out his Drifter on his site.

Chrome plating

I know there USED to be a few chrome platers in the SLC area. They may be gone now and the EPA makes it very difficult to do business.

I know a guy that runs an independent motorcycle shop here in Mesa and we were discussing this a few weeks ago. He told me he sends his chrome plating work to Los Angeles. Consider powder coating, which is relatively inexpensive.

Hey Jared, I was just browsing your blog and looking at the pictures of the AutoRama that you went to. There is a picture of the "Easy Rider" bike... next to it is a sign with the people involved in building it. All the chrome on the bike was done by T & T Plating and Salt Lake Chrome. You may look them up.

Chrome plating

I just sent some trunk brackets to Brown's plating in Kentucky. It's not easy to find someone who is responsive and communicates well for these small custom jobs. I finally settled on Brown's because they have a good reputation, fast turnaround, and they communicate very well. Their pricing is very reasonable, and they have an extensive "dealer" network that apparently will handle getting your part plated for you. Just google "Brown's Plating".

Let us know how it turns out!

Its too bad you couldn't learn to do it yourself in the garage, I once looked but couldn't find any info on how to do it.

This is one of those things you really don't want to do at home. Had a plater as a customer years ago and the guys would draw lots when a service call had to be made. It's a plastic suit + respirator kind of place. Worse than a steel mill.

You're right Stan. The Chrome Shop is out in the Boonies in Madisonville, LA. Chrome plating is not a very welcomed process in populated areas. I know Rob very well and he doesn't allow anyone in his shop during the plating. And I don't think he's worried about anyone stealing his process.

Chrome plating

I made an adapter for our foot brake levers to be able to install stock HD pedals.
The chromer (a bumper shop) wanted a $65 minimum charge, but let me know he would do TWO of them for $75.

Long story short, I made 2.
